Support the day-to-day operations and lead the onsite mechanical effort on Defence and infrastructure projects. This role suits a mechanical engineer with genuine in office experience; someone who interpret the drawings and specification and understands how the work comes together on the ground.
The role bridges design and construction: you interpret the client's design and specifications, then coordinate and deliver the work on site. Mechanical and protective‑coatings scopes typically run together, so an understanding of both is a real advantage.
Key responsibilities
- Read and interpret mechanical and structural drawings, specifications and work packs; mark up as‑builts and raise RFIs.
- Provide mechanical support on site during fitting, installation, assembly, alignment and mechanical works.
- Compile and create QA/QC documentation; prepare project plans, programmes (Gantt) and scopes.
- Carry out quantity take-offs and project procurement.
- Coordinate the direct labour workforce, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Provide advice on technical and engineering issues, and liaise with the client to resolve them.
- Coordinate mechanical works alongside surface preparation and protective coatings scopes.
- Ensure compliance with HSEQ requirements (ISO 9001 / 45001 / 14001 and PCCP).
- Maintain the project sites, premises, plant and equipment.
- Facilitate regular project meetings and report to the Project Manager.
About you
- A degree or tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
- Practical on‑site experience: you understand how the work goes together on the ground.
- Able to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and work packs.
- 5+ years' relevant experience (mechanical infrastructure upgrades, asset remediation, civil/infrastructure or defence).
- Sound understanding of engineering principles.
- Good communication and report‑writing skills; competent with MS Office and MS Project.
- Project delivery skills: budgeting, work priorities, cost control, stakeholder and subcontractor management, documentation.
- Construction Induction (White Card) and a current driver's licence.
- Right to work in Australia; able to meet the security requirements of Defence projects.
Highly regarded
- Construction/site experience alongside your engineering experience.
- Understanding of protective coatings, surface preparation and hazardous‑substance handling.
- AMPP/NACE CIP or coatings inspection certification.
- Experience with blasting & painting and/or concrete rehabilitation works.
