The Organisation
Established in 1993, The Wetlands Centre Cockburn is a not-for-profit community organisation that works to connect the community with wetlands through projects, programs and events which increase the knowledge, awareness, understanding and commitment to their conservation and wise use.
The Wetlands Centre Cockburn is based at Bibra Lake in the heart of the Beeliar wetlands. The Centre supports wetland conservation through learning, participation, restoration activity, and community connection.
We aim to employ people who are committed to working in a team setting and are passionate about conservation and sustainability, whilst taking people on a learning journey about the importance of wetlands.
The Position The Nursery Officer will be responsible to manage the conservation nursery at our newly constructed facilities and meet NGIA accreditation standards as well as facilitates the restoration program. The facilities incorporate a propagation shed, greenhouse tunnel and nursery capacity for 40,000 forestry tubes. The existing nursery program is supported by seed collecting activities, established wetland and bushland seed production areas and seed banking.
The Nursery officer with the assistance of a Nursery volunteer coordinator and under the supervision of the General Manager is responsible for:
- The efficient and sustainable management of the Nursery
- The sustainable management of Wetland Care revegetation and restoration program.
- The maintenance and presentation of the Wetlands Centre gardens
- The training and supervision of staff and volunteers involved in the Nursery, garden maintenance and Wetland Care program.
- Leading public education and community engagement programs at events such as monthly plant sales and annual conference and workshops.
- Ensure all source documents about the management of the nursery and wetland care program are appropriately managed
- Assist and contribute to the Centre’s communication materials including but not limited to the newsletter, social media and website
- Providing detailed regular reports on activities as determined by the General Manager
An important part of your daily role will be liaising with a variety of people including traditional owners, stakeholders, politicians, volunteers, work experience students, school groups and corporates. The position requires a passion and commitment for engaging and sharing knowledge to align with The Wetland Centre’s vision, mission, and values.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
1. Qualification in Horticulture and conservation
2. Experience in plant production and management
3. Strong Perth native plant identification and knowledge
4. Experience in revegetation
5. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel and/or Access database
6. Understanding of OH&S; principles
7. Well-developed written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
8. Highly developed organisational and time management skills and attention to detail
9. Ability to work as a team leader and independently
Desirable
1. Seed collecting experience
2. Available to commence work immediately
3. National Police Clearance Certificate
Other
1. Current WA driver’s licence (manual preferred)
2. Working with Children Check
3. Current First Aid certificate
4. Applicants must have the right to work in Australia
