About the Role
The Technical & Applied Studies Technician (Food and Textiles) position is responsible for providing technical, operational and administrative support to the Technical and Applied Studies (TAS) Faculty.
The role supports the effective delivery of Food Technology and Textiles programs through the preparation and management of practical learning resources, maintenance of specialist facilities and equipment, procurement and inventory management, and compliance with relevant health, safety and food handling requirements.
This position is a fixed term, full-time parental leave coverage position for the 2027 school year, working 38 hours per week Monday to Friday during school terms only. This role will commence on 22 January 2027.
Key Duties
Technical Support for Teaching and Learning
- Prepare and coordinate equipment, ingredients, materials and resources required for Food Technology and Textiles practical lessons and assessment activities.
- Provide technical support to teachers and students during practical classes, ensuring resources are available and learning activities are delivered safely and effectively.
- Assist teaching staff with the preparation and development of practical activities.
- Prepare and organise textile materials, equipment and resources to support curriculum delivery
Resource, Inventory and Procurement Management
- Manage the ordering, receipt, storage and distribution of food, textiles, equipment and consumables required by the Faculty.
- Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels, including specialised resources required to accommodate student dietary,
allergy, cultural and religious requirements.
- Conduct regular stock takes and maintain accurate inventory records for equipment, consumables and Faculty assets.
- Source quotations and purchase resources in accordance with School policies and approved budgets.
- Assist the Head of Faculty with budget monitoring and the identification of future resource and capital equipment requirements.
Facilities and Equipment Management
- Maintain Food Technology and Textiles facilities to a high standard of cleanliness, organisation and operational readiness.
- Ensure kitchens, storerooms, preparation areas and textile workspaces are maintained in a safe, orderly and functional condition.
- Monitor the condition, cleanliness and safe operation of equipment and arrange servicing, repairs and maintenance as required. All large equipment servicing goes through Simon to liaise with companies to assess and then service needed parts as and when necessary.
- Coordinate the storage, maintenance and servicing of specialist equipment, including sewing machines, overlockers, kitchen appliances and other Faculty assets.
- Assist in the management and maintenance of Faculty resources, materials and equipment throughout the academic year.
Food Safety, Compliance and Risk Management
- Maintain food storage systems, stock rotation practices and temperature monitoring processes to ensure food safety compliance.
- Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical registers, cleaning registers and other compliance documentation as required.
- Ensure food products are appropriately labelled, stored, managed and disposed of in accordance with food safety standards.
- Identify, report and assist in addressing hazards, maintenance issues and safety concerns within Faculty facilities.
Operational and Administrative Support
- Maintain accurate records relating to stock, ordering, equipment servicing, maintenance schedules and compliance requirements.
- Liaise with suppliers, contractors and service providers to support Faculty operations, including equipment servicing,
pest management and specialist cleaning services.
- Support the preparation and implementation of faculty functions, hospitality activities, service periods, exhibitions, display evenings, open days and other School events.
- Assist with communication and administrative activities associated with Faculty events and hospitality programs.
General Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with teaching and support staff to ensure the efficient operation of the Faculty.
- Support student wellbeing and maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment.
- Demonstrate a commitment to child safeguarding, professional conduct and the values and ethos of the School.
- Undertake other duties reasonably directed by the Head of Faculty or School leadership.
About You
- Relevant qualification or experience in Food Technology, Hospitality, Textiles or a related field.
- Experience working in a technical support, hospitality, textiles, or educational environment.
- Current Working with Children Check (WWCC) (or ability to obtain).
- First Aid and Food Safety qualifications (desirable).
- Knowledge of food safety, textile production processes and safe operation of specialist equipment.
- Ability to prepare, maintain and manage practical teaching resources, equipment and consumables.
