Security & Control4 Automation Technician | High-End Residential
Baillie is an award-winning Control4 Diamond Dealer based in Dromana, and one of the largest Control4 dealers in Australia. We do the technology in high-end homes across the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne. Anything from a $2 million build to a $30 million estate.
Lighting, blinds, audio, cinema, networking, CCTV, alarms, intercom, access control, climate. Twelve disciplines. One system, run from one app.
We're integrators, not installers. We get involved early, working with the architect well before the builder is appointed.
Who we're looking for
Two backgrounds suit this job and we're happy with either.
If you're already working in Control4
You know the platform. What's worth knowing about us is how we run a job. Racks get built, the system gets programmed, and the whole house gets bench tested in our workshop before anything goes to site. Your certification counts for something here, and you won't be the only person in the building who understands the system. There's a bench, a team and a process behind you.
If you're a security technician
CCTV, alarms, intercom, access control. You pull and terminate cable. You're comfortable on a network, because your industry went IP years ago. You commission gear and you fault-find it, and you know how to work in someone's house without leaving a mess behind you. The half you probably haven't done is audio, cinema, lighting control and blinds. We'll teach you that part.
Either way, it's work that widens your trade rather than repeating it.
How the work runs
The house runs in our workshop before it runs in the client's home. Racks pre-built,
system pre-programmed, the lot bench tested at Dromana before a single box ships. By the time you're on site, the problems have been found and sorted out in the warehouse. What's left is a short, clean fit-off. In practice it means you're working off proper drawings and a scope that's been thought through, instead of working it out on the day.
What you'd be doing
- Cable rough-in and cut-out for data, AV, automation and security
- CCTV, alarm, intercom and access control installs
- Building and dressing racks in the workshop
- Bench testing systems before they ship
- Fit-off of keypads, touchscreens, speakers, displays, projectors, cameras and network gear
- Testing, commissioning and fault-finding
- Control4 programming and configuration, at whatever level you're up to, and training to take you further
- Reading plans properly and picking up problems before they become problems
- Service and aftercare visits on homes we've done
What we're after
- Real hands-on experience in Control4, security, AV, data, electrical or integration
- Cable terminated and dressed to a standard you'd be happy to photograph
- You know your way around an IP network. Addressing, switches, PoE, basic troubleshooting
- You can handle yourself on site with builders and architects,
and in front of a client
- You work clean and you finish things
- Your own hand tools
- Driver's licence and White Card
- Counts for a lot: Control4 certification and Composer, ACMA cabling registration, Victorian security licence, A-Grade electrical licence.
You don't need to have worked on houses at this level before. A fair bit of what we do gets learned here. What we can't teach is the habit of caring about the part nobody sees. The back of the rack. The cable you dressed before the wall went on.
We'd rather hire one technician who's already valuable than three who might be, so we're after experience this round. If you're just starting out, keep an eye on our listings, because we'll be putting on a trainee at some point and we'd rather you went for that one.
What you get
- $90,000 to $115,000 plus super, set on what you actually bring
- Uniform supplied
- Fully maintained work vehicle, phone and laptop once you're through probation
- Control4 certification and manufacturer training paid for. If you're already certified, that budget goes further rather than going away
- A path through to Senior Technician, and into commissioning or project engineering as we grow
- A proper workshop and bench test setup
- Homes that get published, and work you can still point at in ten years
- Small team. When something needs deciding you're talking to the owners, not a head office
- Standard weekday hours. We'll be straight with you about the odd late fit-off
- Based in Dromana, most work is Peninsula and bayside, so you're not stuck on the freeway twice a day
