Mackay State High School is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative and forward-thinking leader to join our team as Head of Department - Humanities commencing 27 January 2027 until 27 July 2027, unless otherwise determined. The successful applicant will lead curriculum, assessment, teaching and learning across Humanities from Years 7-12, including History, Geography, Business and Economics, and Civics and Citizenship in Years 7-10, together with a range of General and Applied Senior Humanities subjects. We are looking for a leader who will provide strong curriculum and instructional leadership, build staff capability and foster a culture of high expectations, collaboration and continuous improvement.
About Us
Mackay State High School welcomed its first cohort of students on 1st January 1912. It was one of the first state high schools opened in Queensland and recognized the growth that was taking place in Mackay and the Pioneer Valley. Since that time, it has continued to develop with the town, establishing a positive and rich reputation. Over the past 108 years many students have graduated to become leaders within the Mackay District and broader community - a history that we are proud of.

Your Opportunity
- Lead curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and moderation practices across the Humanities faculty.
- Provide curriculum leadership across History, Geography, Business and Economics, and Civics and Citizenship in Years 7-10 and General and Applied Humanities subjects in Years 11-12.
- Collect, analyse and interpret student achievement and engagement data to identify priorities and inform improvement.
- Support teachers to achieve high standards and build their qualified capability through professional learning, coaching, feedback and collaboration.
- Lead the implementation of high-quality teaching and learning practices that support engagement and achievement for all students.
- Support, model and coach teachers in effective classroom practices that promote positive learning environments.
As Head Of Department - Humanities, You Will
- Lead the Humanities department to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focused on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
- Embed the principles of the Brighter Futures Education Strategy.
- Set and maintain high standards for student and staff performance.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, professional learning and continuous improvement.
- Actively participate in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
- Form productive partnerships with students, parents, community stakeholders and other government agencies.
