Operations gives you one pit for a decade. Consulting gives you fifty pits you'll never see again. We do something different.
Our clients run quarries, cement operations and industrial minerals sites — deposits measured in decades, permitted last century, hemmed in by growing suburbs, and impossible to replace. A hard rock quarry doesn't sell tonnes; it sells a product mix — concrete aggregate, road base and sealing aggregate — and the pit has to yield that mix, to spec, year after year, from whatever the geology actually is.
A cement quarry is harder again: the schedule has to land kiln feed inside a narrow chemical window, every month, for the next forty years, with no spot market for what misses spec.
Get the planning right and you extend the life of an asset that a business — sometimes a town — is built on. Get it wrong and the mistake compounds for decades.
That is the work. It rewards engineers who think in years, not studies — and who measure success by the practical value added on the ground, not the reports filed.
Who you'd be working for
We are the trusted technical advisor to operators across Australia, New Zealand and North America — from the largest construction materials and cement producers in the industry to family-owned quarry groups and councils where we effectively are their technical department: their surveyor, their geologist, their geotechnical engineer, their mine planner and scheduling engineer.
That mix matters. One week you're presenting strategic scheduling for a cement plant's combined limestone operations; the next you're building the five-year plan that determines whether a family quarry business can commit to its next crusher upgrade.
Eltirus is Brisbane-based, a Deswik,
Seequent and Strayos partner, and delivered the first use internationally of Deswik.GO for aggregates, sand and cement operations. We are usually the firm clients call when the problem has already defeated someone else.
The role
You will report directly to the CEO and lead a small team of mining engineers.
The rhythm of the work — and why it's different:
- Long-term site stewardship alongside project work. For many clients we run the full annual cycle — drilling program, geological model update, resource assessment, mine design, schedule — on the same sites, year after year. Other engagements are one-off studies, but the stewardship work means you watch your plans meet reality and own the consequences.
- The full planning stack. Quarterly operations plans through mid-term schedules, five-year plans, Life of Quarry plans, and resource optimisation studies — in Deswik.CAD, Deswik.Sched and Deswik.GO.
- Chemistry-constrained cement scheduling — the most technically demanding scheduling problem in the industry, and a specialty almost nobody else in the region does well.
- Due diligence and technical review on transactions where the buyer is committing serious capital on the strength of your read of the reserve.
- Leading and mentoring — scope the work, direct the team, review it, sign it,
and build the engineers under you into people who can do the same.
- Owning client relationships end to end, working with Sales on scoping and estimates.
The honest version of the conditions:
- Brisbane-based, hybrid, with genuine flexibility — we care what you deliver, not when you were at a desk.
- Site travel is typically one to two days a month across Australia and NZ, with occasional North American work.
- The work is intellectually hard, and our reporting standard will surprise you at first. That's the appeal. If it isn't, this isn't the right role.
What we need
Essential
- Mine design experience in Deswik.CAD.
- Solid Deswik.Sched capability — you can build a schedule from a blank file, not just maintain someone else's.
- Extensive mining experience at Senior or Principal level.
- RPEQ, or eligible and prepared to obtain it within twelve months.
- Bachelor or Master of Mining Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- The ability to sit across the table from a sceptical owner or CFO and defend your plan with the numbers behind it.
Highly regarded
- Resource optimisation experience, ideally Deswik.GO.
- Time on both sides — operations and consulting.
- Quarrying, cement, aggregates or industrial minerals exposure.
- Experience with product yield, blending, quality or chemistry-constrained scheduling in any commodity.
We will consider a strong Senior Mining Engineer ready to step up, and we'll support the RPEQ pathway to get you there.
