About the Legislative Policy Unit

Queensland Health's Legislative Policy Unit leads the development of primary and subordinate legislation. Our team delivers a broad range of complex and meaningful legislative reform projects.

Recent reforms have spanned tobacco and vaping, mental health, assisted reproductive technology, medicines and poisons regulation, cosmetic surgery, radiation safety, and pharmacy business ownership–offering opportunities to work on legislation that has a real impact on Queensland's and the nation's health system.

This vacancy sits within the National Law team in the Legislative Policy Unit. The National Law team is responsible for progressing national legislative reforms, particularly those relating to the registration, accreditation and regulation of Australia's health practitioners.

About the role





As a Principal Policy Officer in the National Law team within Queensland Health's Legislative Policy Unit, you will lead and support nationally significant legislative reform and intergovernmental policy related to the regulation of Australia's health practitioners.

Working within a collaborative team, you will contribute to the delivery of complex legislative policy and reform priorities. You will provide high-level policy advice, manage legislative and governance processes, and prepare authoritative written materials to support decision-making. Working closely with subject matter experts and stakeholders across Australia, you will coordinate and progress legislative projects, build productive working relationships, and help deliver high-quality outcomes aligned with government priorities.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

- Managing primary and subordinate legislation projects, individually and as part of a project team.
- Preparing high quality and timely Cabinet submissions, Ministerial briefings, drafting instructions and explanatory materials for legislative reforms, with a focus on national reform priorities.
- Consulting with policy and subject-matter experts and external stakeholders, where appropriate, to analyse legislative issues, develop and refine legislative proposals, and present proposals and options to senior decision-makers.

About you

We are looking for people who can bring:

- Experience leading or contributing to legislative reform, or legal or policy experience with a sound understanding of the legislative development process.
- Experience working with, or the ability to quickly build knowledge of, legislation and processes relating to the regulation of health practitioners or other professions.
- Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to work through complex issues and provide clear, practical and timely advice.
