Help power life-changing cancer research, coordinate the lab operations that keep our discoveries moving.

Cancer research is a key strategic priority for Macquarie University and our Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, underpinned by a 2025 plan to grow an integrated cancer care and research program. Here, you'll play a pivotal operational role at the centre of a dynamic cancer research team led by Principal Investigator Professor Helen Rizos, working alongside postdoctoral fellows, research assistants and higher degree research students.

For us, dedicated operational support is essential to ensure continuity of research activity and the smooth day-to-day functioning of the laboratory and team. In this role you'll coordinate the technical, operational and administrative activities of the research laboratory, providing the reliable support that allows scientists to focus on what matters most which is delivering impactful cancer research.

About the Role

- Coordinating the technical and operational administration of the research laboratory, including hands‑on operational and research support for the Principal Investigator and cancer research team.




- Providing teaching support (such as demonstrations in tutorials and practicals) for junior staff and students as required.
- Maintaining project documentation and version control, including protocols, SOPs and amendments.
- Preparing research materials with team members, including ethics submissions, reporting, and assisting the PI with essential research documents, manuscripts, progress reports and acquittals.
- Contributing to scientific outputs including research data preparation and collection, lab meetings, conference proceedings, grant applications and student projects.
- Providing financial, purchasing, procurement and inventory support, and preparing financial reporting on expenditure against budget and project accounts.
- Organising meetings and seminars, coordinating onboarding of new staff and students, and keeping the group informed on upcoming grants, conferences and opportunities.

About You

You are a well‑organised coordinator who enjoys balancing operational, administrative and scientific tasks, and who takes pride in enabling a research team to thrive. You bring sound problem‑solving ability, sound communication skills, and a practical understanding of research laboratory environments.

Selection Criteria

- Tertiary qualifications in an appropriate discipline and/or relevant experience in a related field.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to work both autonomously and as part of a team while taking initiative on day‑to‑day operational matters.
- Solid problem‑solving skills and the capacity to prioritise workload during busy periods.
- Experience carrying out scientific experiments, conducting literature searches, and preparing literature reviews for further analysis.
- Experience developing and working on research projects, including research protocols, experimental design, ethics submissions and grant applications.
- Numeracy skills with experience managing income/expenditure for reconciliation and budget tracking, invoice payments and purchases.
- A working understanding of WHS and safe laboratory practices applicable to the work environment.
