Role focus:
This temporary role provides targeted analytical capacity within Financial Services during a defined period of increased activity associated with the Cost of Teaching model. It operates as a support role within an established model governance and delivery framework, with day-to-day priorities and review provided by the Senior Financial Analyst.
The position requires sufficient understanding of activity-based costing to apply established business rules, interpret allocation logic and recognise matters requiring escalation. It is not responsible for determining model methodology, approving assumptions or holding ongoing ownership of the Cost of Teaching model.
The role works across financial, workforce and operational datasets and engages with internal data owners and external system support where required. Its focus is on accuracy, consistency, documentation and practical support for usable model outputs.
Key responsibilities:
- Support the delivery of the Cost of Teaching model cycle, including data preparation, quality assurance, validation, model updates and output delivery through the Pilbara Insights platform.
- Assist with coordinating and validating input data from internal data owners across Finance, HR/Payroll, Student Services, Schools, ASU, Library and Facilities Management.
- Support liaison with Pilbara Group on model configuration, data issues and output delivery, escalating material matters to the Senior Financial Analyst for review and decision.
- Document key business rules, assumptions, data sources,
allocation logic, validation outcomes and model version changes to support continuity, comparability and audit readiness.
- Analyse Cost of Teaching outputs by school, course and program, identify anomalies or variances, and support school-level review prior to executive presentation.
- Assist with preparing Power BI outputs, briefings, slide decks and commentary that clearly present cost, revenue and margin insights for executive, academic and operational audiences.
- Apply activity-based costing principles, as required, to support analysis of university teaching and overhead costs, including cost drivers, activity pools and cost object allocation.
- Support broader Financial Services analysis, modelling, business case, budgeting, forecasting and reporting activities as directed during the temporary appointment.
- Build constructive working relationships with internal stakeholders and contribute to accurate, timely and professional financial outputs.
- Contribute to process improvement suggestions relating to model processes, data quality and output usability, and raise these with the Senior Financial Analyst for consideration.
Essential experience
- relevant undergraduate qualification in Business, Commerce, Finance or Accounting, or an equivalent combination of relevant knowledge,
training and experience.
- Demonstrated experience supporting financial analysis, modelling or costing activities, including the preparation, validation and reconciliation of financial or operational data from multiple source systems.
- Working knowledge of activity-based costing principles, including cost drivers, activity pools and cost allocation methods, or the demonstrated ability to quickly apply these concepts in a finance context.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, with the ability to work with structured datasets, apply formulas, review outputs and prepare explicit financial analysis.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to identify anomalies, investigate variances and support accurate, auditable documentation.
- Well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively, manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and escalating issues appropriately.
Desirable experience
- Experience using business intelligence or analytics tools, such as Power BI, to prepare dashboards, visualisations or reporting outputs.
- Familiarity with higher education finance, funding or reporting concepts, including EFTSL, Commonwealth-supported places or THEE reporting.
- Experience using enterprise systems such as TechnologyOne, PeopleSoft or similar finance, HR/payroll or reporting systems.
- Experience working in a university, public sector or similarly complex finance environment
