McArthur is seeking experienced Freedom of Information Officers for a Federal Government non-ongoing chance based in Canberra.
This role will support a departmental FOI team responsible for processing requests in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 1982 and relevant OAIC guidelines. The successful candidate will manage FOI matters end-to-end, provide technical advice to internal stakeholders, and support high-quality decision-making within statutory timeframes.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage a complex caseload of FOI requests from receipt through to finalisation.
- Triage incoming matters, set priorities, monitor progress and elevate risks or bottlenecks where required.
- Provide FOI advice and practical support to decision makers and action officers, including on exemptions, searches, consultations and schedules.
- Engage with applicants, including clarifying requests, negotiating scope and extensions of time where appropriate.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including other agencies, OAIC and third parties.
- Draft high-quality correspondence, decision materials and release documentation for delegated decision makers.
- Maintain accurate case records and reporting data in departmental systems.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of FOI processes, templates and guidance material.
To be considered, candidates must have:
- Prior experience working with the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
- A minimum AGSVA Baseline security clearance.
- Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and meet statutory deadlines.
- Availability to commence as soon as possible.
- Canberra-based availability, or the ability to work from a Canberra office as required.
