Scrum Master (Baseline Security Clearance Required)
Location: Canberra, ACT, Australia
Type: Contract (12 months)
Overview An experienced Scrum Master is required to support two key teams within a major digital delivery program. The role involves working closely with a Design Services team responsible for leading the design of digital products and services, and a sustainment-focused team responsible for maintaining and enhancing critical business systems.
The Scrum
Master will empower teams to deliver value while ensuring alignment with Program Increment (PI) objectives and organizational goals. This is a dynamic position that requires agility in managing both planned delivery and reactive incident response within a secure and reliable service environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Coach and Mentor: Act as a servant leader by coaching and mentoring team members on Agile methodologies including Lean, Kanban, Scrum, and SAFe principles. Foster self-organisation, continuous improvement, and build strong, trust-based relationships across teams and the Agile Release Train (ART).
- Facilitate Agile Ceremonies: Lead Agile ceremonies such as Refinement sessions, Sprint Planning, Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives. Support ART events including PI Planning and ART synchronisation activities to enable effective cross-team coordination.
- Planning and Metrics: Ensure planned work is achievable within agreed timeframes while considering constraints. Monitor delivery metrics such as velocity, cycle time, and Work In Progress (WIP) limits to maintain a sustainable pace and consistent delivery.
- Risk and Dependency Management: Identify and remove obstacles or risks hindering team progress, escalating issues when necessary to ensure continuous flow and relentless improvement.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with Designers, Product Managers, Product Owners, and delivery teams to understand requirements, gather feedback, and align efforts with business needs.
Protect the team's Sprint and PI objectives by guiding stakeholder interactions.
- Reporting: Collaborate with Product Owners to maintain accurate and current product backlogs and program-level reporting to support transparency and effective delivery oversight.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum 3 years' experience as a Scrum Master or Delivery Lead for multidisciplinary teams in digital product and/or software design and delivery.
- Strong expertise in Scrum and Kanban techniques and artefacts, including Definition of Done, user stories, backlog refinement, WIP management, and continuous improvement.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to build inclusive team environments and lead teams through change.
- Experience delivering products aligned with the Scaled Agile Framework (Protected), alongside Scrum and Kanban methodologies.
- High proficiency with Azure DevOps and collaboration tools such as Miro and/or Figma.
- Relevant Scrum Master or Delivery Manager qualifications and Agile/SAFe certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Practical knowledge of ITIL-aligned service management practices, including incident, problem, and change management, supporting operational service delivery and release readiness.
- Experience with operational reporting, service performance measurement, and conducting post-implementation reviews to identify service trends, manage risks, and embed lessons learned.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor teams on Agile methodologies and continuous improvement across both Scrum and Kanban frameworks.
- Proven success facilitating ART-level events such as PI Planning and cross-team coordination.
- Familiarity with Australian Government standards, policies, and frameworks, including the Digital Experience Policy.
