Senior Data Engineer – Databricks

We’re seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join a major technology and data transformation program on an initial 12-month contract. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on technical specialist to work across modern data platforms, solution design and engineering delivery, while also playing a key role in mentoring and upskilling an internal data engineering team.

Working closely with technical leads, architects and data engineering teams, you will be responsible for designing and delivering scalable data solutions using modern cloud data technologies. You will also act as a senior technical mentor, helping to uplift engineering capability and establish consistent development practices across the team.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, build and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and enterprise data platform solutions using the Databricks ecosystem.
- Provide hands-on technical mentoring to data engineers, supporting code quality, design patterns and engineering best practices.
- Develop and implement solution designs covering data migration, replication, transformation and integration.
- Build data ingestion pipelines from a range of sources, including SQL databases, APIs and streaming platforms such as Kafka.
- Work with complex data structures, including JSON, and transform data into efficient and optimised formats.
- Develop and maintain pipeline orchestration and workflow solutions using modern tools and frameworks.
- Implement CI/CD practices and automated infrastructure to support reliable and repeatable data platform delivery.
- Contribute to data governance, catalogue management and platform standards




- Explain and document technical decisions, helping the broader team understand data engineering principles and best practices.
- Collaborate with architects, developers and business stakeholders to deliver robust and scalable data solutions.

The organisation is seeking a Senior Data Engineer who can combine robust technical delivery skills with the ability to mentor and uplift an existing team.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

- Extensive experience as a Senior Data Engineer, with solid hands-on expertise across Databricks and Apache Spark.
- Advanced SQL and Python skills, with strong experience developing complex data transformation and ingestion pipelines.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing enterprise-scale data platforms and solutions.
- Solid understanding of modern data engineering patterns, architecture and development practices.
- Experience with orchestration and transformation technologies such as Airflow and dbt.
- Proven experience integrating data from APIs, relational databases and streaming platforms such as Kafka.
- Strong understanding of data migration, replication and transformation strategies
- Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and automated infrastructure within data environments.
- Exposure to data catalogue, governance and metadata management practices
- Demonstrated experience mentoring, coaching and technically developing other data engineers
- Excellent communication and consulting skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
