PONTIANAK, thekabarnews.com—West Kalimantan taekwondo athlete Riyadh Arkaan Ziqri won a gold medal at the 2026 MBW International Taekwondo Championship in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. This marks a notable overseas achievement for his club and province.

The NTC Kalbar athlete competed in the male Class A kyorugi flyweight division for athletes aged 15 to 17. Competitors in this class must weigh between 45.01 and 48 kilograms.

Information supplied by his team said Riyadh secured first place after completing his matches at the three-day tournament.

The championship took place from July 31 to August 2, 2026, at Nilai Indoor Stadium within the N9 Arena complex in Negeri Sembilan.

The venue’s official event listing confirms that the competition brought together athletes from multiple countries. It was held as a Class A international tournament.

Tournament documents identify MBW Taekwondo Club as the organizer and Memory Sport Sdn Bhd as the co-organizer. The published rules classify Class A as a division for athletes with green to red belts. In addition, there are restrictions on head kicks.

Riyadh’s coach, Tania Andika Putri, accompanied him throughout the competition. It was her second appearance as a coach at the MBW International Championship. Previously,

she guided West Kalimantan athletes during its 2023 edition.

Tania said the result reflected the progress made through structured youth training in West Kalimantan.

“Hopefully, this achievement will motivate other athletes to continue improving their abilities and bring pride to Indonesia on the international stage,” Tania said on Tuesday, August 4.

Riyadh competed amid broader international participation by athletes from Pontianak. Before the tournament, the Pontianak municipal administration reported that 58 local athletes would travel to Malaysia for the event.

Pontianak Deputy Mayor Bahasan formally saw off the contingent and said international competition could help young athletes gain experience. As a result, they can strengthen their skills.

Riyadh, the son of Rudi Apriansyah, also received support from his family, coach and NTC Kalbar during his preparation. This support continued through his competition campaign.

The publicly accessible event pages reviewed for this report confirm the tournament’s schedule and venue. However, they do not provide a complete official results database.

Details of Riyadh’s medal and competition category were therefore attributed to information provided by his team and coach.

Although the MBW championship is an international club competition rather than a result currently listed in the World Taekwondo global results database, Riyadh’s gold still gives the young athlete valuable competitive exposure abroad.

His success is also evidence of the opportunities that consistent youth development can bring. It can create more West Kalimantan athletes who can one day represent Indonesia in more and more competitive events.
