Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council is seeking an experienced and community-minded Executive Manager Finance to join our Executive Leadership Team. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this influential role is responsible for providing strategic financial leadership while ensuring strong governance, accountability and long-term financial sustainability for Council and the community it serves. About the Role
The Executive Manager Finance provides leadership and oversight of all financial operations across Council and serves as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Mayor,
and Council.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and managing Council's Finance Department.
- Providing strategic financial advice to the CEO and Executive Team.
- Managing annual budget preparation, monitoring, and reporting.
- Preparing monthly financial reports for Council meetings.
- Overseeing annual financial statements and audit processes.
- Managing treasury, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
- Ensuring compliance with Local Government legislation, accounting standards, and statutory obligations.
- Maintaining Council's asset register and financial management systems.
- Developing and reviewing financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Leading, mentoring, and developing finance staff.
- Supporting continuous improvement and organisational performance initiatives.
About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
- Demonstrated experience in a senior finance leadership position.
- Strong knowledge of financial management, reporting, budgeting, and governance.
- Experience leading and developing high-performing teams.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Strong organisational and time management abilities.
- A collaborative and solutions-focused leadership style.
The following will be highly regarded:
- CPA or CA qualification.
- Local Government experience.
- Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations, government, or community-focused environments.
Most importantly, you will demonstrate a genuine appreciation and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and a commitment to collaborating with communities to achieve positive outcomes.
