About the role
Your role will be casual Boilermaker/General Purpose Hand (GPH) on an ad hoc basis. This is a FIFO position
The Boilermaker reports to the Chief Engineer when engaged in engineering tasks, and is to ensure their allocated tasks are carried out in an efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible manner onboard the vessel.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
The Boilermaker/GPH is responsible for:
- Working as directed in the maintenance and repair of ship’s equipment
- Working as directed whist shipping in operation of machinery & conveyor systems.
- Assist the deck department in line handling as required and discharge of cargo operations.
- Acquire knowledge of the cargo handling equipment and be trained in its operation
- Gain onboard knowledge of the cargo and its hazards, and comply with company regulations in its handling
- Carry out duties applicable to your trade qualifications as directed by the Chief Engineer
- Maintain safe work practices in line with company policies
- Maintain sufficient stocks of materials to carry out your duties in line with projected maintenance programs.
- Maintain your work area in a tidy manner
- Carry out other duties as directed from time to time, noting that during shipping operations (no maintenance down-time), there will be the requirement to assist with cargo discharge and deck operations
- Work as directed on the vessel and acquire knowledge of maintenance operations associated with the vessel and be trained in such methods
- Learn basic seaman’s techniques and act as part of the crew when the vessel is engaged in operations alongside and at sea.
- To participate in fire, man overboard and other drills as and when required
Qualifications & Experience
- Fluent in English (mandatory)
- Experience with computerised Maintenance Management Systems (desirable)
- Boilermaker Trade Qualification (mandatory)
- AMSA Certificate Of Competency General Purpose Hand Near Coastal or equivalent (highly desirable but not essential)
- Substantial experience in maintenance of conveyor systems (highly desirable)
- Confined Space Ticket (highly desirable)
- Vessel Technical and/or Operational experience as Boilermaker (highly desirable)
- Demonstrated knowledge of Quality and Safety Management systems (highly desirable)
- Current AMSA medical (highly desirable but not essential)
- Current COST or STCW (highly desirable but not essential)
- First Aid & CPR Certificate (desirable)
