Are you an M&A; Lawyer looking for something different?
Bluefin is working exclusively with a leading global consulting firm to appoint an M&A; Lawyer to its growing corporate legal team. This opportunity sits within a professional services environment rather than a traditional law firm.
The Partners are former top-tier lawyers who have moved away from private practice to build careers that retain the quality and sophistication of high-end corporate work, with more sustainable hours and greater balance. There is also the opportunity to work closely with teams outside of legal across the consulting business, giving you greater exposure to the commercial drivers behind transactions and a broader understanding of how businesses make decisions.
We've placed an Associate, Senior Associate and Director into this team and have had the opportunity to see how the move has worked in practice. The feedback has been consistently strong: interesting and sophisticated work, excellent people, broader commercial exposure and materially better work-life balance.
The work
Across the Partners, the team advises on mid-market and larger M&A; transactions, including international and multinational deals, buy-side transactions and founder-led businesses selling to private equity. The practice also extends into corporate reorganisations and restructures, private client and family trust work, fund formation and financial services licensing and advisory.
You certainly don’t need experience across all of these areas. There is an opportunity to build your skill set beyond traditional M&A;, and lawyers within the team have particularly enjoyed gaining exposure to some of the more technical areas of the practice.
What’s different?
The model
Sitting within a major global consulting organisation means you’re not working within a purely legal environment. You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside specialists across deals, tax, finance and other areas of the business,
giving you greater visibility of the commercial considerations behind a transaction and exposure to the way different disciplines come together to advise a client.
You’ll also have access to the technology, AI capabilities and broader resources you would expect from a significant global organisation.
It creates an interesting middle ground between private practice and in-house: sophisticated and varied transactional work, robust senior lawyers to learn from, but with greater exposure to the commercial side of transactions and a different way of working.
Culture & lifestyle
Words like culture, flexibility and work-life balance are often thrown around in recruitment. With this team, I’ve had the opportunity to see it in practice.
I’ve placed three lawyers into the team, including working parents, and the feedback has reflected what I was told from the outset. The culture is low ego and down to earth, people are encouraged to be themselves, and quality of work is valued over simply maximising billable hours.
Flexibility is supported, family and life outside work are respected, and the candidates I’ve placed have found the hours materially more sustainable.
What are we looking for?
Ideally, you’ll have around 2–5 years’ PQE, although there is flexibility either side for the right person.
You might be coming from:
- A top-tier, mid-tier or highly regarded boutique corporate practice
- An M&A;, corporate or broader transactional practice
- An in-house legal role where you’ve retained strong corporate or transactional experience
Your experience could include:
- M&A; transactions, including acquisitions and disposals
- Drafting and negotiating transaction documents
- Due diligence and transaction management
- Corporate restructures and reorganisations
- General corporate and commercial advisory
- Working directly with clients and senior stakeholders
You don’t need to tick every box. Strong technical foundations are important, but aptitude, commerciality and personality matter just as much.
