What we do
EOS is building our high energy laser weapon capability.
The Directed Energy group develops and demonstrates laser systems in the tens to hundreds of kilowatts class for counter‐uncrewed aircraft system (C‐UAS) and short range air defence roles, spanning the laser source, beam director, tracking and fire control, power and thermal management, and platform integration.
Electrical power is one of the defining constraints of a laser weapon.
This role owns the architecture that gets several hundred kilowatts from a generator or platform supply, through energy storage and conversion, into a laser that demands clean, stable, high current DC on demand, inside a container or on a vehicle.
You will design it, build it, commission it and stand next to it when it is switched on, working across power electronics, energy storage, control electronics, harnessing, protection and electromagnetic compatibility.
Every role in this team spends time in the field.
Our systems are proven at the test range and on trial sites, and you will be there when that happens.
Job Summary
The job plays a pivotal role in the electrical architecture, safety and reliability of EOS directed energy systems, from prime power through to the laser and beam director loads.
You will provide expertise in high power electrical design, energy storage integration, control and instrumentation electronics, and electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility in a defence setting.
Key Responsibilities
Design the electrical power architecture for containerised and vehicle mounted laser systems, covering prime power, energy storage, conversion, distribution and protection.
Size and specify high current DC distribution, protection devices, contactors, bus bars and cabling for high transient loads.
Design and integrate battery energy storage systems, including battery management selection, safety interlocks, charge management and thermal monitoring.
Design control and instrumentation electronics, including PCB design in Altium Designer, for interlocks, sensing and subsystem control.
Produce schematics, wiring diagrams, harness drawings and load schedules to AS **** and AS ****, and manage their configuration under engineering change control.
Lead electrical safety, earthing and bonding design in accordance with AS/NZS **** and related standards, and support electromagnetic compatibility design and testing.
Support integration, commissioning, fault‐finding and trials, including on‐site work at the test range and at customer locations.
Produce and maintain electrical design documentation, analysis and test evidence within the EOS systems engineering framework.
Experience
Essential:
Degree in electrical or electronic engineering.
Minimum 4 years designing power electronics or electrical systems for industrial, defence, transport or energy applications.
Demonstrated experience with high current DC systems, power conversion and protection coordination.
Practical experience integrating battery energy storage, battery management systems and their associated safety requirements.
Schematic capture and PCB design experience in Altium Designer or an equivalent package.
Working knowledge of AS/NZS wiring and electrical safety standards, and of electromagnetic compatibility design practice.
Hands‐on commissioning and fault‐finding capability with oscilloscopes, current probes, power analysers and similar equipment.
Willingness to travel to the test range and trial sites regularly, including periods of out‐of‐hours work around demonstration campaigns.
Highly regarded:
Experience with laser diode drivers or high stability, high current sources.
Exposure to defence platform power and electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
Experience with generator sets, shore power or hybrid power systems.
Chartered status with Engineers Australia (CPEng) and listing on the National Engineering Register, or working towards it.
Our team come from a diverse range of disciplines and backgrounds and include engineers, scientists, technicians, project managers and administrative staff.
EOS designs, develops, and builds the world's most accurate and highest precision remote weapon systems.
EOS has designed, manufactured and exported advanced technology systems for nearly 40 years.
Our product range covers remote weapon systems, turrets, high energy laser weapons, counter‐drone systems, and space intelligence and space control services.
