Legal Secretary - Victims of Crime Practice
About Us
We are a Melbourne-based legal practice with a dedicated focus on victims of crime matters. Our firm manages a high volume of sensitive applications requiring detailed documentation, strict compliance with statutory requirements, and a trauma-informed client approach.
The Role
Due to continued growth and an increasing caseload, we are seeking a Legal Secretary to support our solicitors in the management of complex victims of crime matters.
The ideal candidate will have prior experience in statutory financial assistance schemes, victim support services, claims handling, legal administration, or another administrative environment involving the preparation and coordination of evidence-based applications. The role also requires a high level of professionalism, empathy and discretion when communicating with clients who may be experiencing significant trauma or distress.
The position will initially be offered on a part-time basis, working five days per week from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. There is potential for the position to progress to full time hours in the future, depending on the needs of the practice and the successful candidate.
For a candidate who demonstrates strong capability and an interest in developing their legal skills, there may also be scope for the position to evolve beyond traditional legal secretarial duties and incorporate more substantive Legal Clerk responsibilities over time.
Initially,



the successful candidate will be required to work from the office to facilitate training, supervision and familiarisation with our systems and processes. Flexible working arrangements may become available once the successful candidate is sufficiently experienced in the role and able to work autonomously.
Key Responsibilities
Preparation and management of victims of crime applications and supporting evidence
Drafting legal correspondence and documents in accordance with legislative requirements
Coordinating large volumes of documentation, including medical and other evidentiary material
Managing solicitor workflows, deadlines and court-related timeframes
Liaising with clients and external agencies in a trauma-informed and professional manner
Maintaining accurate and compliant file management systems
Assisting with billing and administrative processes
Skills & Experience
Experience in victims of crime or personal injury law (highly regarded)
Demonstrated ability to manage high-volume or complex legal files
Strong organisational and time management skills
Excellent attention to detail and document accuracy
Ability to communicate sensitively with vulnerable clients
Requirements
Ability to work autonomously and within a team in a fast-paced environment
Remuneration
Remuneration will be commensurate with the successful candidate's skills and experience and will meet or exceed the applicable rate under the Legal Services Award ****.
