Stormwater / Flood Engineer – Northern Beaches, Sydney
3–5 Years' Experience | Stormwater, Drainage & Flood | Residential Developments
Multidisciplinary Consultancy | Excellent Culture & Career Development
An excellent opportunity is available for a Stormwater / Flood Engineer with approximately 3–5 years' experience to join a well-established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy based on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
Operating successfully for more than 25 years with a team of 40+ staff, the consultancy has built an excellent reputation across Structural, Stormwater, Flood, Remedial and Civil Engineering, with a particularly strong presence across the residential and multi-residential development market.
The business combines the security, technical capability and project pipeline of an established consultancy with a genuinely friendly, down-to-earth and collaborative culture.
The team is relatively young, social and supportive, with a relaxed Northern Beaches environment just minutes from the beach.
The Opportunity Reporting directly to the Stormwater Manager, you will join an established Stormwater & Flood team, working across a strong pipeline of residential development projects throughout the Northern Beaches and Greater Sydney.
The primary focus is stormwater, drainage and flood engineering, taking projects from initial site investigation and concept development through detailed design, approvals and delivery.
Of particular interest is an engineer who has also gained some previous structural design experience.
This background will allow you to better understand the interaction between drainage infrastructure and building structures and, where appropriate, contribute to residential structural projects alongside experienced structural engineers.
It is a particularly interesting opportunity for an engineer who enjoys variety and practical problem solving, rather than being confined to one narrow area of engineering.
Your Role Responsibilities will include:
Developing practical stormwater management and flood engineering solutions from initial investigation through design, approval and completion
Preparing stormwater management strategies, engineering plans, technical reports and approval documentation

Undertaking hydraulic modelling, OSD design, drainage assessments and flood analysis
Preparing documentation to support DA, CDC and CC approvals
Undertaking site inspections to assess existing drainage conditions, constraints and performance
Identifying drainage and flooding issues and developing practical engineering solutions
Liaising directly with clients, councils, architects, builders and other consultants
Coordinating stormwater and drainage solutions with building structures and other disciplines
Taking increasing ownership of projects, including technical delivery, coordination and client communication
Supporting and assisting junior engineers where appropriate
Contributing to structural design, documentation and site inspections on selected residential projects where your experience allows
About You
Ideally, you will have:
Approximately 3–5 years' experience in stormwater, drainage and/or flood engineering
Australian consulting engineering experience, ideally within the Sydney / NSW development market
Strong capability in stormwater management design, OSD, hydraulic drainage assessments and modelling
Experience preparing stormwater management plans, reports, flood studies and associated engineering documentation
Experience working through council and development approval processes
Working knowledge of relevant council requirements, Australian Standards and NSW development requirements
Experience with software such as DRAINS, MUSIC, HEC-RAS and/or TUFLOW
Confidence undertaking site inspections and translating site conditions into practical engineering solutions
Strong technical report writing and attention to detail
Excellent communication skills and confidence dealing directly with clients and project stakeholders
The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities within a busy consulting environment

Previous experience in structural engineering and building design would be particularly attractive.
This could include experience with concrete, steel and timber structures, residential structural design, documentation and construction inspections.
An understanding of the NSW Design and Building Practitioners framework would also be highly regarded.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
There is a lot to like about this position for an engineer who wants technical variety, project ownership and genuine client exposure without moving into a large corporate environment.
You will join an established business with a strong local reputation and ongoing project pipeline, while working closely with experienced engineers and managers who can continue developing your technical capability.
The multidisciplinary nature of the consultancy also means you can see projects more broadly — understanding how stormwater, flood, structural and civil engineering interact within the overall development, rather than working on one isolated component.
Advantages include:
Northern Beaches location, only minutes from the beach
Established consultancy with 25+ years in business and 40+ staff
Strong and ongoing residential development project pipeline
Semi-flexible working hours supporting better work-life balance
Supportive, friendly and collaborative team
Direct access to experienced managers and senior engineers
Genuine opportunities for career progression and increased project responsibility
Professional development courses and ongoing technical training
Performance recognition scheme with financial rewards
Friday team lunches and a fully stocked kitchen
Breakout lounge and informal office environment
Regular social activities and optional company trips
This would be an excellent opportunity for a Stormwater / Flood Engineer who enjoys working across the complete project lifecycle, wants greater ownership and client interaction, and values being part of a friendly, established consultancy where there is room to continue developing both technically and professionally.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
Full work rights & local experience essential.
