Leading Hand - Heavy Vehicle Fitter/MechanicZappala Diesel Service and Repairs – Cairns QLDThis role would suit an experienced Heavy Vehicle Mechanic who is ready to take the next step into leadership and help build and grow our heavy vehicle division, while remaining hands‐on in the workshop.You will play an important role in supporting our technical team, maintaining high standards of workmanship and safety, developing customer relationships and helping drive the continued growth of the business.At Zappala Diesel, we know we wouldn't be the successful company we are today without a great team of people.
We value our employees, invest in their development and provide a workplace where people can build a rewarding long‐term career.We are proud to offer our team:Excellent hourly high town rate, reflecting your level of experienceRegular overtime opportunities.All uniforms and PPE providedPositive, supportive team environmentOngoing training opportunities to help you advance your careerThe opportunity to take ownership of and help grow our heavy vehicle divisionLong‐term career opportunities within a growing local businessA varied and interesting workload across a broad range of equipmentWhat will you be doing:As the Leading Hand Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, you will be both a technical leader and hands‐on mechanic, working closely with the workshop team and management.Leading, advising and supporting the technical team to ensure a high standard of workmanshipMentoring and educating mechanics and apprenticesExpert diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, transmissions, and drivelinesPerforming and supervising fleet maintenance and safety inspectionsUtilising diagnostic equipment to identify and rectify faultsWelding and fabricating components as requiredDeveloping and maintaining strong customer relationshipsAssist with job estimation and invoicing tasksProcurement of parts and materials in a timely manner.Assisting with the planning and coordination of workshop workflowEnsuring that all safety guidelines and quality standards are metUsing in‐house computer programs to manage jobsSupporting management with the continued development of the heavy vehicle divisionOur ideal candidate:We are looking for someone who is technically capable, commercially minded and ready to lead from the front.You will ideally have:Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical TechnologyPrevious experience in providing maintenance and repairs to various heavy fleetMinimum of 3 years post trade experiencePrevious Leading Hand,



supervisory or senior mechanic experience highly regardedHR license (essential), HC or MC (advantageous)Forklift license (advantageous)Ability to work independently on a range of heavy equipment and vehiclesOwn basic tools specific to tradeAble to pass a pre‐employment medical and drug screenWho will you be working for:Zappala Diesel is a well‐established, locally owned and operated business that has been servicing the Cairns region for more than 15 years.We specialise in whole‐fleet maintenance, providing our customers with a one‐stop solution for their heavy fleet repair and maintenance requirements.Our workshop is equipped with specialised tooling and equipment to ensure repairs and maintenance can be completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.Our key focus is providing high‐quality, personalised whole‐fleet maintenance and repair services, helping our customers maximise productivity and minimise costly downtime.We believe our people are at the heart of our success.
