The Role
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Grade 2 Custodial Mental Health is responsible for the provision of safe, evidence-based, person-centred care in line with the standards, policies and procedures of the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other statutory authorities.
This care provided utilises the principles of Trauma Informed Care and Recovery and in accordance with the National Practice Standards for Mental Health Workforce and the NSW Health Mental Health Competencies.
The position provides a high standard of care in the assessment and management of mental health issues, as well as discharge planning and transfer of care. The position demonstrates strong clinical leadership in the ongoing development and review of treatment planning and clinical review systems for patients with mental health concerns.
The CNS2, Custodial Mental Health provides clinical care through in-person clinics, on-site in correctional centres, as well as via virtual care, on-site at a Justice Health NSW site.
Position holders based within a correctional complex will be required to provide virtual clinics, at times, and may be required to attend another correctional centre. Position holders based at other Justice Health sites will be required to attend correctional centres for in-person clinics, at times.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
- Three years' fulltime experience working in mental health and possesses post-graduate qualifications in mental health, or a combination of equivalent experience and qualifications.
- Current unrestricted NSW Driver's Licence and willingness to travel across Sydney metropolitan and rural adult correctional centres throughout NSW as required.
Our Service and Team
Custodial Mental Health (CMH) is a specialist mental health service within the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network that provides a range of mental health services to adults in NSW correctional centres.
CMH includes a specialist mental health team with mental health nurses (MHNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), Aboriginal Mental Health Clinicians, psychiatrists, career medical officers (CMOs), and psychiatry registrars who are supported by administrative and managerial staff.
CMH clinicians work alongside staff from other clinical streams and CSNSW staff, including Psychology, Offender Services and Programs, and Custodial Operations staff in the provision of mental health services. Mental health services begin at the point of reception and continue through to release from custody or transfer to another correctional centre.
