The Welding & Materials Engineer will support welding and materials engineering activities across a major Australian naval sustainment program. The role is responsible for developing and maintaining welding procedures, material specifications, coatings and associated engineering solutions that meet demanding design, safety, quality and regulatory requirements.

Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, the role will provide technical advice, support engineering assurance and collaborate with Australian and international stakeholders to resolve technical issues and deliver program outcomes.

The role is located in Perth, WA

Skills & Experience

Essential

- Bachelor's degree in Materials, Metallurgy, Welding, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in welding and/or materials engineering.
- Strong understanding of welding processes, material properties and NDT methods.
- Experience developing engineering solutions within a controlled engineering environment.
- Robust analytical, problem-solving and technical communication skills.
- Experience with engineering governance, risk management and configuration control.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain an NV1 Defence Security Clearance and relevant program access requirements.

Desirable

- Experience in Defence, naval engineering, shipbuilding or submarine sustainment.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status.
- International Welding Engineer (IWE) qualification.
- Familiarity with Australian and international naval engineering standards.
- Project or people management qualifications.
- Certificate 10 qualification, where relevant.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

- Develop, review and maintain welding procedures, material specifications, coatings and associated engineering documentation.
- Provide technical advice across welding,



materials, coatings and NDT activities.
- Support the qualification and verification of welding procedures and material selections.
- Investigate and resolve welding and materials-related technical issues through structured root-cause analysis.
- Identify and manage technical risks, non-conformances and engineering issues.
- Support engineering reviews, assurance activities, audits and technical investigations.
- Work with internal engineering teams, international stakeholders and external partners to maintain technical alignment.
- Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable standards, safety requirements, governance and regulatory frameworks.
- Contribute to engineering schedules, risk registers and delivery planning.
- Capture lessons learned and support continuous improvement across engineering activities.

- Engineering deliverables are completed on schedule and to required quality standards.
- Welding procedures and material specifications are appropriately developed, qualified and approved.
- Technical risks and issues are identified, managed and resolved effectively.
- Engineering activities comply with applicable safety, quality, regulatory and governance requirements.
- Effective collaboration is maintained across Australian and international stakeholders.
- Technical documentation and engineering records remain accurate, current and compliant.
