Health Services Manager
Christmas Island | Full Time Ongoing
Salary Package starting from $192,000, plus subsidised housing
The Indian Ocean Territories Administration (IOTA) is currently seeking a motivated, skilled and suitably qualified person to join our team as the Health Services Manager (HSM) within the health services, based on Christmas Island.
Responsibilities include management of delivery of primary and acute health care services in two of Australia’s most remote and spectacular settings – Christmas Island (CI) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI). This includes a 24-hour eight bed hospital and primary care facility on CI and clinics on Home Island and West Island in the CKI.
About the Role
Working collaboratively with the Director of IOTA and other Service Stream managers, other key responsibilities of the Health Services Manager position include:
- Providing operational management of the Christmas Island Hospital and the health clinics on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to deliver key health services for IOT communities;
- Providing day to day management of financial, infrastructure, human and physical resourcing;
- Providing leadership and proactive engagement to maintain a harmonious, multi-disciplinary approach to quality health care in a remote cross-cultural environment;
- Ensuring all health functions operate in accordance with governance frameworks and budget allocations;
- Undertaking procurement of specialist services and equipment;
- Facilitating co-operation and developing positive partnerships and collaborative working arrangements with relevant stakeholders;
- Ensuring services are provided to the communities of CI and CKI in a manner that is sensitive to, and appropriate for, people of different cultural backgrounds;
- Undertake regular official travel to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to ensure consistent standards and practices are being met.
About You
The successful applicant will possess effective management experience, motivated to enhance, and support staff performance and wellbeing, while positively influencing workplace culture, and aligning objectives in a health setting.
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Knowledge and experience in managing clinical and corporate governance compliance and systems, including accreditation standards to provide high quality health outcomes.
- Senior leadership experience in daily operational management of people, financial resources, intellectual resources, physical resources and systems in a remote multicultural health setting.
- Experience in managing resources and deliverables in accordance with agreed budgets and plans in an operational environment.
- Post graduate qualifications in Health Management, Allied Health, Nursing or a related field is desirable.
- Experience in government procurement,
and compliance and working in a rural or remote environment with a multicultural workforce and community is advantageous.
To be considered, applicants must obtain Security Clearance at Baseline Vetting Level (must be Australian Citizen) and possess a valid ‘C’ class drivers’ licence and valid Western Australian Working with Children Check.

- Base salary between $154,997 and $178,858 per annum, plus
- Employer contribution to superannuation at 16% of base salary, plus
- District Allowance starting from $492.84 per fortnight in addition to base salary, plus
- Generous leave entitlements, including 27 days of Annual Leave, plus
- Annual return airfares allowance to Perth for yourself and eligible dependents, plus
- Relocation assistance including packing, door-to-door delivery and storage will be provided if relocating to the Indian Ocean Territories, plus
- Heavily subsidised housing and vehicle relocated, if relocating to the Indian Ocean Territories.
