Principal Java Software Engineer (Backend | AWS | Oracle)

We're seeking a highly skilled Java professional to join a collaborative engineering team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex enterprise applications using up-to-date cloud and backend technologies.

Role Details

Eligibility: Australian Citizenship

Security Clearance: Baseline Security Clearance

Location: Canberra, ACT

Work Arrangement: Hybrid – Regular work-from-home available with occasional office attendance

Employment Type: Contract

Contract Duration: Initial 12-month contract + 2 x 12-month extension options

Start Date: September 2026 (Approx.)

Experience Level: Principal Software Engineer (EL2 Equivalent)

Hours: Up to 40 hours per week

About the Role

You'll play a key role in supporting, maintaining, and enhancing a large-scale enterprise application used in a highly operational environment. Working alongside experienced software engineers and technical specialists, you'll deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing backend solutions while contributing to continuous platform improvements.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade Java applications
- Develop backend services using Java, Spring, and Spring Boot
- Build and maintain RESTful APIs and SOAP web services
- Design and implement Oracle database solutions, including data modelling and stored procedures
- Develop cloud-based integrations using AWS services
- Develop and maintain ReactJS web interfaces where required
- Produce technical designs, documentation, and API specifications
- Maintain CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Git, Maven, and related DevOps tools




- Participate in software releases and production deployments
- Implement automated testing and contribute to software quality improvements
- Collaborate with architects, developers, and stakeholders across the project
- Participate in a shared on-call support roster (after-hours calls are extremely rare)

Essential Skills & Experience

- 8+ years of commercial Java development experience
- Strong experience with Spring Framework and Spring Boot
- JPA, Hibernate ORM, and enterprise design patterns
- REST APIs, SOAP Web Services, OpenAPI, XML, JSON, XSD, and WSDL
- Oracle Database development, SQL, PL/SQL, and data modelling
- EC2
- Lambda
- API Gateway
- S3
- SQS
- CloudFormation
- Unix/Linux and Bash scripting
- Maven, Git, Jenkins, and CI/CD pipelines
- Automated testing and software engineering best practices
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Java EE experience

- Experience with large enterprise systems
- Strong technical documentation skills
