Quality Engineer Automation / Material Handling – Melbourne

Our client is a global leader in automation and material handling solutions, delivering complex projects across engineering design, manufacturing, and site installation. They are seeking an experienced Quality Engineer to join their team on a contract basis, overseeing quality across the full project lifecycle.

About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Manager – Quality & Business Process Improvement, this role oversees quality aspects of projects from engineering design and procurement through to manufacturing and site installation/commissioning. You will work closely with project teams and external stakeholders to implement and maintain robust quality management systems, ensuring deliverables meet or exceed customer expectations and industry standards.

This role covers multiple projects across multiple sites, working alongside a small team.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop and champion end-to-end Project Quality Plans aligned with company standards and objectives
- Conduct inspections, audits, testing and verification activities across projects
- Lead supplier and subcontractor quality audits, and manage prequalification quality processes (PPAP, FAT)
- Coordinate site quality inspections and sample checks to confirm installation meets design specifications
- Log and manage non-conformities, driving root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective/preventative actions (CAPA)
- Coordinate with Purchasing to align equipment FAT and installation quality milestones with payment gates




- Analyse cost of quality and non-conformance data to develop lessons learned and improvement plans
- Liaise across Sales, Solutions, Engineering, Projects, Customer Service, Purchasing, Finance, Administration, IT and HR

About You

- Extensive experience in a Quality Engineer role within automation, manufacturing, or technology industries
- Formal qualification in audit, quality assurance, or ISO9001 (Lead or Internal Auditor certification highly regarded)
- Robust track record conducting supplier and subcontractor quality audits
- Mechanical and/or electrical background, with the ability to read and interpret technical drawings
- Working knowledge of metrology and measurement/calibration practices
- Experience with root cause methodologies (e.g. 8D, Ishikawa) and continuous improvement techniques
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
- Strong critical thinking, attention to detail, and a high level of accuracy
- A mature, autonomous operator who can hit the ground running after an initial handover and shadowing period
- Comfortable managing competing priorities across multiple concurrent projects and sites
- Current driver's licence and access to a vehicle required

Ways of Working

Based in the office 3–4 days per week during the initial settling-in period, transitioning to approximately 2 days per week once established.
