ABOUT US
Unleashing Unlimited Potential
Every child deserves the chance to explore their potential, find joy, and build a hopeful future. However, many of the children we support have been denied these opportunities due to economic hardship, family instability, trauma or social isolation.
At The Portsea Camp, we’re rewriting their stories. Through structured, evidence-informed programs that go far beyond recreation, we empower children with confidence, resilience and real-world life skills. Our goal is not just to give them a week of happiness, but to create experiences that can positively influence the trajectory of their lives.
Rooted in a proud legacy dating back to the 1940s, The Portsea Camp today is a thriving community of staff, volunteers and young people from across metropolitan and regional Victoria. Each year, we support thousands of children and young people through programs centred on connection, wellbeing, outdoor adventure and trauma-informed care.
Set on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, our team works together with a shared purpose: helping children and young people grow into healthier, happier and more confident versions of themselves.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We’re looking for an experienced Finance Manager to join The Portsea Camp in a highly flexible, part-time capacity of approximately 9 hours per week.
This is a unique opportunity for a senior finance professional who wants to continue doing meaningful, high-level work without committing to a traditional full-time finance role.
You might be an experienced Finance Manager, accountant or financial professional looking to balance work with family, consulting, another role, semi-retirement or simply a different pace of working life.
The role is intentionally structured around oversight, financial leadership and strategic support, rather than day-to-day transactional processing.
Our Accounts Officer manages the daily finance functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking and reconciliations. Your role is to provide the professional oversight, review, guidance and financial insight that keeps our finance function strong.
Reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with the Operations Team, your key focus will be:
- overseeing and supporting the Accounts Officer;
- preparing and lodging BAS and overseeing financial compliance;
- leading budgeting, forecasting and management reporting;
- providing financial modelling and scenario planning;
- delivering clear financial insights to support organisational decision-making.
The position is in office at The Portsea Camp, allowing you to stay connected to the organisation, our team and the work your financial expertise directly supports.
As the organisation evolves, there is also scope for the role to grow into broader strategic finance, systems improvement,
risk management and organisational projects should available hours increase.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide professional oversight, guidance and support to the Accounts Officer responsible for day-to-day finance processing.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking, reconciliations and general ledger integrity.
- Review key reconciliations, payment processes, payroll reports and financial controls.
- Prepare, review and lodge BAS and oversee other relevant finance-related statutory obligations.
- Lead the annual budgeting process and coordinate forecasting and reforecasting throughout the year.
- Prepare or oversee monthly management reporting including Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow and variance analysis.
- Identify financial trends, risks, opportunities and areas requiring management attention.
- Provide clear and practical financial advice to the CEO and Leadership Team.
- Develop financial models and scenario analysis to support decisions relating to programs, pricing, staffing, revenue, expenditure and organisational initiatives.
- Support financial reporting to the Board and Finance Committee.
- Monitor organisational cash flow and financial sustainability.
- Liaise with external accountants, auditors and professional advisers as required.
- Maintain strong internal financial controls and appropriate segregation of duties.
- Support continuous improvement of financial systems and processes where capacity permits.
- Contribute financial expertise to workforce planning, program costing, grants, risk management and other strategic initiatives as organisational priorities and available hours allow.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in finance, accounting or business services, including experience overseeing finance operations.
- CA, CPA or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
- Demonstrated experience across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking and reconciliations.
- Solid experience preparing and lodging BAS and managing finance-related statutory compliance.
- Demonstrated experience in budgeting, forecasting, management reporting and variance analysis.
- Strong financial modelling and scenario-planning capability.
- Experience preparing financial information for senior leadership, Boards or Finance Committees.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate financial information into practical advice for non-financial stakeholders.
- Experience supervising,
coaching or supporting finance staff.
- High level of organisation, accuracy, attention to detail and professional judgement.
- Ability to identify priorities and deliver high-value financial outcomes within a focused part-time role.
- Proficiency in MYOB, Xero or similar accounting systems.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in accounting, finance, commerce or a related discipline.
- Alignment with the vision and values of The Portsea Camp.
Desirable
- Experience in the not-for-profit, education, community or social impact sector.
- Experience working closely with a CEO, Board or Finance Committee.
- Experience with workforce costing, scenario planning or organisational financial modelling.
- Experience improving financial systems, processes and internal controls.
WHAT WE OFFER
- A genuinely flexible senior finance role of 9 hours per week.
- The opportunity to maintain meaningful, strategic work without the demands of a full-time Finance Manager position.
- A clearly defined role focused on financial oversight, reporting, compliance and strategic advice — with an Accounts Officer managing the day-to-day transactional finance functions.
- Flexibility around how your weekly hours are structured, by agreement.
- A supportive CEO, Operations Team and broader organisation.
- The opportunity to directly contribute to the long-term sustainability and impact of a respected Victorian not-for-profit.
- A beautiful on-site working environment in Portsea on the Mornington Peninsula.
- A fun, positive and community-minded workplace culture.
- $70 per hour, plus superannuation.
- Salary packaging benefits available.
- Scope for the role and hours to grow over time as organisational needs evolve.
This role would particularly suit an experienced finance professional seeking purpose, flexibility and professional autonomy in a position where a small number of well-focused hours can make a significant organisational contribution.
