About the role

We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Developer – Team Lead to drive the delivery of embedded software projects while supporting and coordinating a small team of developers. You will combine hands‑on development with team guidance, ensuring work meets technical standards and project deliverables.

You will apply your technical expertise in Rust, C, and/or C++ and Python within embedded environments, while fostering a collaborative and high‑performing team culture.

The role is hands‑on and involves working directly with embedded hardware, including collaborating with technicians and tradespeople during development, integration and testing.

The role also encompasses software supporting deployed devices,



including an Azure‑based dashboard and associated services. Experience developing or maintaining cloud‑based applications and services, particularly within the Azure ecosystem, is therefore valuable.

What are we looking for?

Mandatory Technical Requirements:

Australian Citizenship (required for Defence‑related project work)

Proficiency in Rust, C, and/or C++ and Python programming languages, particularly for embedded systems

Experience developing and integrating software for embedded hardware platforms, with familiarity with relevant embedded technologies and frameworks

Ability to integrate software solutions with embedded hardware platforms

Work directly with embedded hardware and collaborate with technicians and tradespeople during integration, testing, troubleshooting and deployment.

Experience developing or maintaining web applications and services, including Azure‑based applications and services supporting deployed products

Experience writing, testing, and deploying software on Linux‑based platforms, with understanding of system internals and toolchains

Capability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code

Minimum 3 years professional software development experience

Demonstrated practical capability, supported by a GitHub or similar portfolio

Experience providing technical guidance, coordinating development tasks, or supporting the work of other developers

Ability to conduct code reviews and provide constructive technical feedback

Desired Technical Experience:

Qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field

Experience using debugging tools, protocol analysers, and embedded build systems

Exposure to automated testing, CI/CD pipelines and managing production deployments

Experience within Defence, aerospace, or highly regulated industries

Existing Australian Government security clearance (particularly NV1 or higher) highly regarded

Key Responsibilities:

Develop, test, and maintain high‑quality software solutions for embedded systems





Participate in design discussions and define appropriate technical approaches

Develop software with appropriate consideration for performance, resource usage, reliability and maintainability

Conduct code reviews and promote good software development practices

Support and coordinate part‑time developers to ensure effective progress and delivery of assigned tasks

Mentor junior developers to support their technical growth

Collaborate with the Product Owner to define, estimate, and plan development tasks

Liaise with clients and stakeholders to ensure a clear understanding of requirements and project objectives

Provide regular technical updates to clients and stakeholders, communicate project progress and risks, and help manage expectations around scope, timelines and deliverables

Ensure software meets internal and client standards and contributes to successful project outcomes

Office‑based in Canberra

Potential travel to Secure Bits offices in Sydney and Melbourne

Flexible working arrangements available (within reason)
