HorizonOne Recruitment
Canberra
Our client is a nationally significant Australian cultural institution responsible for collecting, preserving and providing access to important documentary and digital resources. Its Technology Operations team supports the systems that keep this mission running, from production environments through to backup, disaster recovery and cybersecurity operations. The institution manages one of Canberra’s larger on-premise storage environments, a reflection of the scale and permanence required to preserve collections for future generations.
The Opportunity
This is a senior technical prospect for an experienced storage specialist to take significant ownership of large-scale, on-premise storage and data protection environments. This is a genuine step up for someone currently managing storage as part of a broader infrastructure remit. You will report directly to a senior technology leader and work alongside experienced APS6 and EL1 colleagues across related functions. While there is support within the broader team, this position will be relied upon as a key source of specialist storage expertise, making it well suited to someone comfortable taking ownership and providing technical direction. The role also contributes to projects, procurement, vendor management, cybersecurity controls and broader infrastructure resilience.
The Role
You’ll take ownership across four connected areas: storage platform design, data preservation, enterprise backup, and cybersecurity uplift. In this role you’ll be responsible for:
- Designing and evolving large-scale on-premise storage architecture and storage tiers
- Forecasting long-term capacity requirements for growing digital collections
- Managing storage networking, restoration and data integrity capabilities
- Designing and operating enterprise backup, replication and recovery platforms
- Maintaining reliable LTO tape operations aligned with archival requirements
- Monitoring and optimising storage performance, utilisation and array health
- Coordinating firmware, patching and infrastructure lifecycle activities
- Strengthening disaster recovery, business continuity and cybersecurity controls
The Ideal Person
You will bring substantial experience working with complex enterprise storage environments and enjoy being the technical specialist others turn to for advice.
You will have at least five years’ demonstrated experience in the design, procurement, installation, maintenance and management of large-scale storage systems. Your experience is likely to include enterprise backup and recovery, capacity and availability management, storage architecture and infrastructure operations.
Beyond technical capability, you will be comfortable working with stakeholders, vendors and other technology specialists, providing expert advice and helping shape longer-term technical decisions. Experience with government procurement practices would be advantageous but is not essential.
An understanding of government procurement practices would be highly desirable.
