Integrations & Automation Developer - GATTON

Nolan's Interstate Transport - Toowoomba QLD

Nolan's Interstate Transport is recognised as a leading provider of cold chain solutions. Our dedicated team of professionals are the driving force behind our success. With a strong family owned identity Nolan's have been successfully servicing our customers up and down the Eastern Seaboard for over 100 years.

About the Information Technology Department

Join our dynamic technology team, where your passion for technology and strong problem-solving skills will directly impact our organisation's success. We value innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement, and we're looking for someone who shares these ideals to help drive our systems forward.

Job Summary

Nolan's already runs an established customer integration platform. Orders, consignments, status updates, PODs and invoicing flow between our systems and those of large national and international supermarkets, produce growers and dairy processors, every day, at volume. That platform is business critical and it is already built.

We are creating this position because we want to do it better. This is a client facing platform role for a developer who will take ownership of our existing integrations, modernise them, bring new customers on faster and more cleanly, and put strong engineering practice behind a platform that has grown alongside the business.

Automation is the other half of the role. The business will bring you the problems, the manual processes, the double handling, the report someone rebuilds by hand every week, and how they get solved is yours to decide: purpose built code, low/no-code workflows, or AI assisted solutions running in the cloud or on our own infrastructure.

You will not be doing this alone. You will join an established team that already supports these systems, and you will work directly with the IT Manager, operations, and our customers' technical teams. What is new is the focus: this is the first role at Nolan's dedicated to integration and automation as its primary responsibility.

We are looking for a developer who is comfortable owning something end to end: talking to the business and to customers, designing the solution, writing the code, testing it, deploying it, and supporting it in production.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Integrations:

- Own, maintain, and improve our existing integrations covering orders, consignments, status updates, PODs, and invoicing.
- Onboard new customer integrations from initial requirements through to production, working directly with customer IT and EDI teams.

- Modernise and consolidate legacy interfaces, improving reliability, error handling, and visibility.
- Monitor integration health, investigate failed and rejected transactions, and resolve issues before they reach operations.
- Maintain integration documentation, mappings, and customer specifications.

Automation & AI:

- Build and maintain automation solutions in Python to remove manual and repetitive work across the business.
- Develop workflows using Power Automate and Logic Apps where a low/no-code solution is the right fit.
- Help shape our use of AI in business process, including document and data extraction, classification, and assisted decision making, across both cloud hosted services and self hosted models.
- Work with the IT Manager and business stakeholders to turn operational problems into working automated solutions, and recommend improvements to the systems you build and support.

Data & Reporting:

- Write and optimise SQL against our transport management, warehouse, and operational databases.
- Build datasets, extracts, and reports to support operational and management reporting.
- Manage all code in GitHub, using branching, pull requests, and code review.
- Write clear, maintainable, documented code and maintain appropriate test coverage.
- Contribute to build, deployment, and release practices.

Delivery & Collaboration:

- Manage your work in Jira, keeping issues, estimates, and progress current.
- Work with the IT Manager and business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate operational problems into technical solutions.
- Provide support for integration and automation issues, backed by the wider IT team.
- Contribute to solution design discussions and to the ongoing improvement of our development standards and practices.

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

Education:

- Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, combined with demonstrated commercial development experience. Equivalent demonstrated experience will be considered.

Core Technical Expertise:

Development:

- Strong commercial Python development experience, including building and supporting production services.

- Solid understanding of good software engineering practice: version control, code review, testing, and documentation.

Integration:

- Demonstrated experience building and supporting system to system integrations using REST and SOAP APIs, and file-based interfaces (XML, JSON, CSV, flat file) over sFTP and similar transports.
- Experience with EDI standards and messaging is highly regarded.
- Ability to interpret customer integration specifications and negotiate technical requirements with external parties.
- Comfortable maintaining and improving systems you did not originally build.

Databases:

- Strong SQL skills, including writing and tuning queries against relational databases (Microsoft SQL Server).
- Understanding of data modelling and of working with third party application databases.

Tooling:

- Practical working knowledge of GitHub, including branching and pull request workflows.
- Practical working knowledge of Jira for issue tracking and delivery.
- Familiarity with low/no-code automation tools (Power Automate, Logic Apps).

Advantageous:

- Exposure to AI and LLM assisted workflows, including self hosted models and runtimes such as Ollama, and cloud AI services.
- Experience with containerisation and deploying containerised workloads.
- Experience with Azure services relevant to integration and hosting.
- Experience with message queues or event driven patterns.
- Prior experience in transport, logistics, warehousing, cold chain, or supply chain.

Core Competencies:

- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication skills, including with non-technical staff and external customer contacts.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership of outcomes, and see work through to production.
- Proactive attitude and passion for continuous learning.

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, on site (38 hours per week plus O/T rates).

Why Join Us?

Impact: Own the integration platform that connects Nolan's to some of the largest food and grocery businesses in the country, and lead the automation and AI program that changes how the business works.

Team Environment: Collaborate with a supportive, forward-thinking team dedicated to excellence.

Career development: Continuous learning and development opportunities with upskilling and certification opportunities.

Career Growth: Influence technology direction with product owner opportunities for driven employees.
