Lead Carpenter / Carpenter – Retractable Screen Installer (High-End Homes)
You're a carpenter first. The product, we'll teach you.
Freedom Retractable Screens makes and installs Australian-made retractable fly screens for homes across Melbourne — many of them high-end builds where the architect wants the screen to disappear into a bifold, stacker or cavity door. That's where the carpentry is: rebating tracks into timber, tile and stone floors, working sills and thresholds, pod pavers, scribing and packing to reveals that were never square, and leaving a finished home cleaner than you found it.
We're after a qualified carpenter — ideally one who has run their own jobs or led a small crew — to take a car, run their own installs, and grow into leading the bigger integrations.
If you're a subbie who's tired of quoting, chasing invoices and paying for your own car, this is a steady week without going back onto a big site.
Freedom Retractable Screens Victoria & SA is a leader in retrofit retractable screens, with over 70 years' combined experience across the team, and our products are Australian-made. The factory is in Carrum Downs, with showrooms also in Richmond and Torquay. We've grown every year for ten years and have more work booked than ever.
What you’ll do
- Install retractable screens on finished homes and new builds — several jobs a day, planned and booked for you, mostly Melbourne metro.
- Do the carpentry that makes a screen look built-in, not bolted on: rebating tracks into floors, sills and thresholds, packing and scribing, working to the architect's detail.
- Cutting of pod pavers to integrate screens further.
- Deal directly with homeowners, builders and architects.
- Assist on,
then run, the larger multi-screen integrations, with a second installer working with you.
- Assess and repair damaged screens on service calls.
- Look after your car, tools and job records. On site, you're the business.
What you get
- $80,000–$100,000 base plus super. Where you land depends on your trade experience and whether you've led jobs.
- Overtime paid on top when you work it — this is not a salary that swallows your hours.
- Take-home company car, fuel card and power tools supplied.
- Regional Victoria and occasional interstate work is part of the job — planned in advance, with travel and accommodation covered.
- Options for flexible working arrangements.
- A small team where you deal directly with the director. Decisions get made the same day.
- Regular team functions & activities.
- Paid product training, then a transparent path: installer → lead installer → running the install team. We pay for the tickets you need.
Who we're after
Must have:
- Trade-qualified carpenter (Certificate III in Carpentry or equivalent). A cabinet maker with real on-site fit-off experience will be considered.
- Full driver's licence.
- White Card (Construction Induction).
- Finish-carpentry standards — you notice a 1 mm step and fix it before anyone else sees it.
- Comfortable running your own day, talking to clients, and working on your own.
Good to have:
- Leading-hand or foreman experience, or you've run your own jobs.
- Fit-off, joinery installation, door and window installation, or shopfitting background.
- Time on high-end residential builds.
- No retractable-screen experience needed. We train the product in your first weeks.
