The Role
Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) is seeking a qualified and experienced Senior Engineering Officer that will drive fleet reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance by providing high level technical expertise and root cause resolution to the fleet engineering function.
Acting as the critical link between engineering strategy and workshop operations, the role delivers engineering solutions and technical support to optimise vehicle performance and support continuous improvement across the entire fleet.
You will be part of an experienced, multi-skilled workshop team whose work directly supports Victoria’s frontline firefighters and emergency response capability.
Functional Accountabilities
- Under direction from the Senior Fleet Engineering Manager, investigate and develop evidence-based solutions with sound engineering practice for a range of technical problems which may be encountered during vehicle selection, commissioning and during its in-service life cycle.
- Conduct technical assessments of design change using CAD (2D & 3D modelling), suitability, modifications and any associated engineering computations such as weight distribution moments.
- Conduct engineering compliance inspections and assessments of fleet vehicles and modifications to ensure adherence to applicable Australian Design Rules (ADR), Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), Australian Standards, manufacturer requirements and Fire Rescue Victoria engineering specifications, and prepare supporting technical reports and recommendations.
- Drive engineering excellence and best practice design and processes to FRV's fleet of light and heavy vehicles. Including providing technical expertise and input into the development and review of technical specifications and bulletins.
- Manage and support warranty, defect and quality assurance investigations by analysing maintenance data,
workshop trends and supplier performance, coordinating corrective actions with internal stakeholders and external suppliers, and maintaining accurate records to support continuous improvement and lifecycle asset management.
- Working collaboratively with other trades, Team Leaders, Supervisors and specialist areas across FRV
- Completing required workshop and maintenance documentation
- Maintaining high standards of occupational health and safety, quality and workmanship
- Participating in technical training, skills development and continuous improvement activities

What you will need to Succeed
To be successful in this position, you will have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline.
- Ability to be a Member of the Institution of Engineers, Australia or equivalent.
- Comprehensive experience in engineering fields, with a demonstrated focus on heavy vehicle fleet reliability, maintenance engineering, or root cause analysis.
- Where additional licensing, training or recertification is required to enable an employee to perform their duties, FRV provides support in accordance with the applicable Enterprise Agreement.
- Experience working on fire appliances, emergency-service vehicles or other specialist heavy vehicles is advantageous but not essential.
