When people talk about the Flying Doctor, thoughts generally turn to red-bellied planes undertaking rescue missions in the Outback. However, the current Victorian story is one that reflects today's challenges for people living in remote and rural communities across the state. While we do still transport people by air and by road, this work is complemented by a range of primary health services that address the most common issues people living in country Victoria face when accessing health care.
About the Role
The role is so much more than a regular Dentist role! Imagine working in your chosen profession, all while being able to explore parts of Victoria that you may not have visited before; where communities embrace your presence with warmth and appreciation.
The Flying Doctor Oral Health Service delivers high-quality dental care to regional and remote Victorian communities through fixed and mobile clinics, as well as through its partnership with Smile Squad, Victoria's school dental program. As a Dentist, you will provide high-quality clinical dental care in line with your scope of practice, professional standards, and RFDS service requirements.
This role will require regular travel to fixed and mobile clinic locations across regional and remote Victoria, including overnight and some weekend stays, to ensure the effective delivery of oral health services to rural and remote communities.
Key responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Provide high-quality preventive and therapeutic dental care, including patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, within scope of practice and organisational requirements.
- Collaborate with patients, team members and stakeholders to ensure coordinated care and positive client experiences.
- Promote good oral health and RFDS services through collaboration with team members, stakeholders and patients.
- Supporting team members with the set-up, operation and relocation of mobile dental services across Victoria.
To be successful, you will need:
- Clinical Competence: Aligned to experience, delivers comprehensive dental care within scope, including patient safety, infection control and record keeping.
- Evidence Based and Quality Driven Practice: Ability to reflect on own practice, apply current research and clinical guidelines to ensure high-quality evidence-based care.
- Communication and Team Work: Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills; with a solutions-focused, collaborative approach to teamwork and stakeholder engagement.
- Infection Prevention and Control: Sound awareness, understanding and practical application of infection prevention and control principles within the dental setting.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Relevant tertiary qualification (i.e. Bachelor of Dental Science)
- Current registration with AHPRA as a General Dentist with no current conditions or undertakings.
- Previous clinical experience as a Dentist within Australia (highly desirable)
- Previous experience with the provision of mobile dental services (highly desirable)
- Current or willingness to obtain a Medium Rigid (MR) Driver's License for the purpose of driving RFDS dental trucks.
- Satisfactory completion of safety screening including a current Working with Children's Check, National Police Check, and the right to work in Australia.
