About Us
When people talk about the Flying Doctor, thoughts generally turn to red-bellied planes undertaking rescue missions in the Outback. However, the current Victorian story is one that reflects today's challenges for people living in remote and rural communities across the state. While we do still transport people by air and by road, this work is complemented by a range of primary health services that address the most common issues people living in country Victoria face when accessing health care.
About the Role
The role is so much more than a regular OHT role! Imagine working in your chosen profession, all while being able to explore parts of Victoria that you may not have visited before; where communities embrace your presence with warmth and appreciation.
The Flying Doctor Oral Health service provides high-quality dental care to regional and remote Victorian communities through fixed and mobile clinics, and as a partner provider of Smile Squad, the Victorian Government's school dental program. As an Oral Health Therapist, you will provide clinical dental services to children and adults, working within your scope of practice, competence and service requirements as set by RFDS and relevant stakeholders, including Oral Health Victoria and RFDS Federation.
This role involves travelling to various fixed and mobile locations across rural and remote Victoria, including primary and secondary schools. As a locum OHT, the travel component is typically in one-week blocks, Monday to Friday, with opportunity for multiple-week stints including occasional weekend stays.
Key responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Undertake accurate patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, providing high-quality preventative and therapeutic dental care within your scope of practice and in line with RFDS and Oral Health Victoria policies.
- Collaborate with patients,
team members and stakeholders to ensure coordinated care and positive client experiences.
- Promote good oral health and RFDS services through collaboration with team members, stakeholders and patients.
- Supporting team members with the set-up, operation and relocation of mobile dental services across Victoria.
- Travel regularly throughout regional Victoria as part of service delivery, with occasional weekend stays in regional locations where operationally required.
To be successful, you will need:
- Clinical competence: Demonstrated ability to deliver comprehensive dental care within scope of practice, including patient safety, infection control and accurate record keeping.
- Evidence-based and quality-driven practice: Ability to reflect on your own practice and apply current research and clinical guidelines to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care.
- Communication and teamwork: Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills, with a solutions-focused and collaborative approach to teamwork and stakeholder engagement.
- Infection prevention and control: Sound awareness, understanding and practical application of infection prevention and control principles within a dental setting.
Qualifications and experience:
- Relevant tertiary qualification, such as a Bachelor of Oral Health, and current AHPRA registration as an Oral Health Therapist or dual qualified Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist, with no current conditions or undertakings.
- Previous clinical experience as an Oral Health Therapist within Australia,
extended scope of practice in adult dental therapy and experience delivering mobile dental services are highly desirable.
- Current Medium Rigid (MR) Driver Licence, or willingness to obtain one, for the purpose of driving RFDS dental trucks.
- Satisfactory completion of safety screening including a current Working with Children's Check, National Police Check, and the right to work in Australia.
What working at RFDS can offer you:
- Five non-accruable Office Closure Leave days each year
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- Access to salary packaging options to reduce your taxable income
- Fitness passport - a discounted gym membership to gyms and pools that both you and your family can enjoy
- Access to discounted private health insurance
- Locum casual opportunity, available as needed for a minimum of 4 weeks per year, with travel to regional and remote locations across Victoria.
