All Saints Anglican School is seeking a Head of Bands to provide strategic and artistic leadership of its Woodwind, Brass and Percussion program, fostering musical excellence, broad participation and high-quality ensemble performance across the School.
About the Role
The Head of Bands provides strategic and artistic leadership for the Woodwind, Brass and Percussion program across All Saints Anglican School. The role is responsible for building a coherent and engaging pathway from beginner musician to advanced performer, inspiring musical excellence, fostering broad participation and strengthening the profile of instrumental music within the broader life of All Saints Anglican School.
Working collaboratively with the Director of Performing Arts and Performing Arts colleagues, the Head of Bands leads ensembles, mentors instrumental staff, supports student development and contributes to future-focused music pathways.
The Head of Bands is a full-time permanent position.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership
- Lead the strategic development, coordination and growth of the Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Program, including progressive student pathways and the Year 5 Curriculum Instrumental Program.
- Foster student participation, engagement and belonging, ensuring alignment between instrumental tuition, ensembles, classroom music and broader Performing Arts priorities.
- Drive innovative initiatives that expand and enhance music opportunities for students.
Ensemble Leadership
- Conduct and oversee ensembles as required, maintaining high standards of musicianship, rehearsal practice and performance.
- Coordinate ensemble operations, including rehearsals, performances, staffing, communications and participation in School and external events.
- Engage guest artists, clinicians and industry professionals to enrich student learning and performance experiences.
Student Development and Wellbeing
- Inspire students to achieve musical excellence while promoting confidence, enjoyment and lifelong engagement in music.
- Provide inclusive opportunities that support diverse abilities, aspirations and leadership development.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to support student wellbeing and positive participation.
Staff Leadership and Administration
- Lead, mentor and support instrumental staff, including recruitment, induction and professional development.
- Oversee program resources, facilities, instruments, music libraries and administrative records.
- Contribute to budgeting, resource planning and compliance requirements, including copyright and licensing obligations.
Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement
- Maintain an agreed teaching load of classroom Music and/or instrumental tuition.
- Build solid relationships and communicate effectively with students, families, staff and the wider music community.
- Promote the Bands Program and develop partnerships with external organisations, professionals and community groups.
About You
Our ideal candidate will bring;
- Exceptional musicianship and a demonstrated record of performance excellence.
- Outstanding conducting, rehearsal and ensemble leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to inspire young musicians and build high-performing, inclusive ensembles.
- Expertise in one or more of the Woodwind, Brass or Percussion disciplines.
- Strong leadership, organisational, interpersonal and communication capability.
- A commitment to student wellbeing, inclusion and child safety.
- A collaborative approach to working within a large and dynamic Performing Arts Department.
- Undergraduate degree in Music Performance or Music Education.
- Current Queensland College of Teachers registration,
or the capacity to contribute through specialist instrumental teaching consistent with School requirements.
- Current Blue Card/Working with Children Check, or ability to obtain one.
Whilst not mandatory the following would be considered an advantage:
- Postgraduate studies in Music Performance or Music Education.
- Experience leading school concert band and jazz programs.
- Experience teaching classroom Music and/or experience providing individual instrumental tuition or small group instruction.
- Experience mentoring instrumental staff, ensemble directors or conductors.
- Experience arranging music for school ensembles.
- Experience developing contemporary or modern music pathways.
- Active engagement with professional music organisations such as ABODA, ASME or equivalent.
