Role Purpose
The Student Support Officer provides practical, relational and evidence-informed support for students with diverse learning, sensory, communication, executive functioning, social-emotional and regulation needs.
The role works collaboratively with students, teachers, Academic Service and Heads of Year, to strengthen access, participation, belonging, safety and learning engagement across the school environment.
The position supports the implementation of reasonable adjustments, personalised support plans, proactive regulation and transition strategies, and inclusive classroom and cocurricular practices.
The role contributes to an approach that recognises student strengths, reduces barriers, promotes student voice and agency, and supports staff capability in understanding and responding to diverse learning needs.
Core Accountabilities
Provide targeted day-to-day support for students, including students with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, sensory processing differences, communication differences and related profiles, while recognising that each student has individual strengths,



preferences and support needs.
Build respectful, strengths-based relationships with students and support them to develop self‐advocacy, learning engagement, organisation, emotional regulation, social connection and independence appropriate to their age and developmental stage.
Assist with the implementation of reasonable adjustments and personalised student support.
Support students during key transition points, including commencement, timetable or classroom changes, assessment periods, excursions, camps, cocurricular activities and movement between year levels.
Implement individual and small‐group strategies that support executive functioning, sensory regulation, communication, routines, social understanding, study skills and positive participation in school life.
Support proactive responses to dysregulation, distress, school avoidance, social conflict or learning barriers using calm, respectful, trauma‐informed approaches in accordance to the student support plan.
Ensure support practices align with school policies, child safety obligations, duty of care, disability inclusion requirements, privacy expectations and relevant procedures.
Undertake other duties, projects or tasks as directed, within skills, competence and classification.
Qualification
Relevant qualification and/or demonstrated experience in education support, disability support, youth work, psychology, occupational therapy assistance, speech pathology assistance, social work, inclusive education or a related field.
Skills and Experience
Demonstrated understanding of diverse learning needsand the practical supports that may assist students to participate, learn and experience belonging at school.
Experience supporting students with diverse learning, communication, sensory, social‐emotional, executive functioning or regulation needs in an educational or youth‐focused setting.
Ability to usestrengths‐based and student‐centred approaches that respect dignity, identity, voice, autonomy and individual differences.
Ability to implement practical strategies, adjustments and routines under the direction of the Head of Academic Services.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build trust with students, work collaboratively with staff, and communicate respectfully with parents and carers.
Sound judgement, professionalism and capacity to maintain confidentiality, accurate records and appropriate boundaries.
Ability to respond calmly and constructively to student distress or dysregulation, escalating concerns in line with school procedures.
Commitment to child safety, student wellbeing, inclusive education, duty of care and continuous professional learning.
