Basin Sands Logistics
Broken Hill
HSEQ & COMPLIANCE ADVISOR
Own the function. Influence the operation. Make a difference.
Basin Sands Logistics (BSL)
Broken Hill, Far West & North Central NSW
Tired of being the person who just maintains the paperwork?
This could be the role you're looking for.
Basin Sands Logistics (BSL) is an established regional Australian logistics and mining services business headquartered in
Broken Hill
.
We operate heavy vehicles, road trains, mobile plant, workshops, materials handling equipment and mining/civil operations across regional NSW.
We're looking for an experienced
HSE & Compliance Advisor
who wants more than a traditional safety officer position.
We want someone who will
take ownership of HSE across the business, get into the operation, identify the risks, fix the problems and influence how work is done.
This is a hands‐on role with genuine access to senior management and the opportunity to build and improve the systems you are responsible for.
THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO OWN HSE
You won't be sitting in an office waiting for someone to give you a checklist.
You'll be working directly with:
Heavy vehicle drivers
Plant and equipment operators
Workshop and maintenance personnel
Supervisors and managers
Contractors
Mine and operational teams
You'll see the work first hand, identify the risks and work with the people doing the job to make it safer and more effective.
Your role will cover the full HSE and operational compliance spectrum, including:
WHS & Risk
Lead operational risk assessments
Develop and review JHAs, JSEAs, SWMS and other critical risk documentation
Maintain and continually improve the company's risk register
Identify critical risks and verify that controls are actually working
Conduct workplace inspections and safety observations
ICAM Investigations for incidents, near misses and hazards
Drive corrective actions through to completion
Drug & Alcohol
You will take ownership of BSL's Drug & Alcohol program, including:
Pre-employment testing
Random testing
For-cause testing
Testing schedules and coordination
Record management
Chain-of-custody processes
Follow-up actions and compliance
Compliance
Maintain the HSE compliance framework
Monitor legislative and regulatory requirements
Maintain compliance registers
Conduct internal audits
Prepare the business for external audits and regulatory inspections
Manage contractor compliance
Maintain site and operational documentation
People & Culture
Deliver inductions and toolbox talks
Maintain training and competency systems
Work with supervisors to improve safety leadership
Engage directly with the workforce
Help build a proactive reporting and safety culture
Injury Management
Coordinate injury management
Support return-to-work processes
Liaise with workers, managers and external providers
Monitor claims and identify opportunities to reduce lost time and improve outcomes
Continuous Improvement
This is where we expect you to add real value.
We want you to identify opportunities to:
Simplify systems
Remove unnecessary paperwork
Improve risk controls
Improve workforce engagement
Reduce operational risk
Improve compliance
Strengthen management reporting
If you see a better way of doing something, we want you to implement it.
WE WANT AN OPERATOR — NOT A PAPER PUSHER
You may be right for this role if you've previously thought:
"There has to be a better way of doing this."
You understand that a 20-page procedure sitting in a folder doesn't make anyone safer.
You know the difference between
compliance on paper and compliance in the field.
You can walk into a workshop, depot or operational site and have a conversation with a driver, fitter or operator just as comfortably as you can sit down with management and discuss risk.
You aren't afraid to challenge unsafe behaviour.
You aren't afraid to challenge management when something isn't right.
And you don't walk away from a problem until it's fixed.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
You'll ideally bring:
Cert IV WHS or higher
Demonstrated experience in HSE/WHS, safety or compliance
Experience in transport, logistics, mining, civil construction, heavy industry or another high‐risk workplace
Strong practical risk assessment capability
Incident investigation experience
Drug & Alcohol program experience
Audit and compliance experience
Strong understanding and/or knowledge of WHS Mining Regulations (NSW)
Excellent communication skills
Strong organisational skills
The ability to work independently
More importantly...
We're looking for
capability, judgement and attitude
.
You don't need to have spent your career working for a Tier 1 mining company.
In fact, experience working in an SME or regional operation may be a significant advantage.
We need someone who can walk through the door, understand the business and
take ownership.
WHY BSL?
Genuine autonomy
You will have the opportunity to take ownership of the HSE function rather than simply administer someone else's system.
Direct access to management
You will work closely with senior management and have the opportunity to influence operational decisions.
Variety
Heavy vehicles. Road trains. Workshops. Mobile plant. Logistics. Mining. Civil operations. Multiple sites.
You'll never be bored.
Make a visible difference
You'll be able to see the results of your work across the operation.
Regional lifestyle
Live and work in Broken Hill — one of Australia's most distinctive regional communities — without the constant FIFO/DIDO cycle.
THE FIRST 12 MONTHS
We aren't expecting you to simply maintain what already exists.
Your first 12 months will be about
understanding, strengthening and improving the HSE function.
We expect you to:
First 90 days
Understand our operations and critical risks
Establish relationships with supervisors and workforce
Review existing HSE systems
Identify gaps and immediate priorities
Establish a clear HSE improvement plan
3–6 months
