Group 6 Metals is seeking a proactive and technically skilled
Geotechnical Engineer
to join our Mining team at the Dolphin Tungsten Mine in Grassy, King Island.
This is a permanent position offering the rare opportunity to support geotechnical engineering across a unique underground mining operation in a stunning and remote location.
About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Geotechnical Engineer will assist in maintaining the site's Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP), carrying out inspections, monitoring ground conditions, and supporting the development of geotechnical models, hazard plans, and excavation designs.
This role will work closely with Mine Engineering, Geology, and Survey teams to ensure ground stability, site safety, and operational efficiency.
Geotechnical Monitoring & Assessment
Conduct routine geotechnical inspections of underground development, stopes and pit walls.
Monitor, analyse and interpret data from geotechnical instrumentation.
Support the development of hazard plans, stability assessments and geotechnical models.
Assist with development and stope design, including excavation sequencing.
Identify geotechnical hazards and communicate controls to operational personnel.
Prepare high‐quality reports, hazard maps and geotechnical risk assessments.
Participate in geotechnical investigations related to incidents.
Safety & Compliance
Promote strong geotechnical safety awareness across site teams and contractors.
Ensure compliance with statutory geotechnical and mine safety regulations.




Participate in monthly area safety meetings.
Follow safe work procedures and systems to protect yourself and others.
What We're Looking For
Qualifications
Tertiary degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Mining or Civil Engineering.
Skills & Experience
Experience in a geotechnical engineering role.
Exposure to open‐pit or underground geotechnical practices.
Experience with geotechnical monitoring systems and data interpretation.
Ability to conduct geotechnical inspections and hazard mapping.
Essential Competencies
Strong understanding of rock mechanics fundamentals.
Familiarity with geotechnical software packages.
Ability to interpret geological models, maps and structural data.
Solid analytical and problem‐solving capability.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Commitment to safety and procedural adherence.
Desirable
Underground mining experience.
Knowledge of mine backfill stability.
Survey or GIS capability.
First Aid qualification.
Ability to work independently as competence develops.
