About the role
This is a Senior Risk Engineer (Mining) role where your mining and risk engineering expertise will protect clients' businesses, shape strategies, and drive meaningful change across the Asia Pacific region. Working closely with underwriters, brokers and clients, you'll deliver meaningful risk insights, conduct in office assessments, and develop practical risk reduction strategies. Your engineering knowledge will directly influence how clients manage and mitigate risk.
Key responsibilities
- Perform risk reviews, including on-site inspections and desktop reviews, with a focus on risk identification and the development of actionable risk mitigation strategies
- Produce accurate, high-quality reports that explain the risk including construction, occupancy, protection, exposures and loss estimates
- Participate in the production of external publications for brokers and clients, as well as internal educational materials and technical papers
- Support underwriting teams at client/broker meetings by demonstrating Starr's engineering expertise, approach and value add
- Maintain and expand technical and professional expertise to deliver current, innovative, and customer-focused risk engineering advice
- Monitor risk trends and industry issues, identifying emerging risks specific to the Mining space in Asia Pacific
- Build and nurture collaborative, client-centric relationships, actively facilitating knowledge exchange among peers locally and across the Starr global team
- Handle client requests with a consistently high level of professionalism and customer satisfaction
- Manage own accounts and client programs and co-ordinate account requirements with underwriters, clients and brokers
About you
- Minimum 15 years plus in a Mining / Insurance Risk Engineer role
- Practical experience working in both mining and insurance risk fields
- Experience to review all types of mining operations both surface and below ground as well as downstream processing plants
- Bachelor of Engineering in either Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or equivalent
- Experience working in an international business environment with a strong focus on internal and external client engagement
- Strong problem-solving and process management skills
- Knowledge of international standards such as NFPA, FM and Australian Standards, licensing frameworks, and other mining industry accreditations
- Excellent communication and computer skills
- Self-motivated and autonomous
- Willing to cross-train in other industries, undertake internal Starr courses and participate in industry seminars and workshops
