About the role
Walgett Shire Council is looking for an experienced Regulatory Compliance Officer to become part of a new and developing regulatory compliance team. Your prior ranger/compliance experience and ideas are welcomed to shape how services are delivered.
You’ll work alongside another Regulatory Compliance Officer and a broader, collaborative team. The role offers variety, including:
- Companion animal management, animal welfare, impounding, pound operations and rehoming
- Investigating illegal dumping, unauthorised camping, abandoned vehicles, littering, noise and environmental nuisance
- Undertaking regulatory investigations, gathering evidence and preparing matters that can withstand scrutiny

- Delivering community education and building better relationships with the community
- Contributing experience and ideas to operational planning, policies, programs and service improvements
- Base location by negotiation at Walgett, Lightning Ridge or Collarenebri
About you
Regulatory work is more than issuing fines. You’re comfortable making field decisions, communicating with diverse community members, and choosing the right approach (education, negotiation, enforcement). Ideally you bring:
- Experience in regulatory compliance, ranger services, companion animal management or similar
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation: Companion Animals Act 1998, Impounding Act 1993, Local Government Act 1993, Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997
- Experience conducting investigations, gathering evidence and making defensible decisions
- Confidence handling companion animals safely and professionally
- Strong communication skills and resilience in difficult situations
- Confidence to put forward ideas while listening and learning from colleagues
- Willingness to share knowledge and help build a robust team
- Ability to work independently while communicating and backing teammates
A Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services), similar qualification or equivalent demonstrated experience is required, together with a current Class C driver’s licence.
