Your new company This Federal Government agency plays an important role in supporting nationally significant programs and outcomes across Australia. They are seeking an experienced APS6 Audit & Assurance Officer to join their governance and assurance function on a 12-month contract, with a possible 6-month extension, commencing in late September. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled audit, risk or assurance professional to contribute to the delivery of internal audit activities, governance reporting, risk management and business continuity initiatives within a complex government environment.
Your new role
As the APS6 Audit & Assurance Officer, you will be responsible for coordinating key elements of the agency's internal audit, assurance, risk management and business continuity functions. You will work closely with internal stakeholders, senior leaders, governance committees and external providers to support effective governance, strengthen internal controls and improve organisational resilience.
Your responsibilities will include
- Coordinating and managing the delivery of the internal audit program in line with the approved annual audit plan
- Managing the relationship and contract with the internal audit service provider, ensuring agreed milestones and deliverables are met
- Maintaining the audit recommendations register, including monitoring, reporting, escalation and closure of management actions
- Preparing high-quality reports, briefings and committee papers on audit, assurance, risk and business continuity matters
- Supporting the effective operation of the Audit and Risk Committee, including committee member recruitment, appointment and onboarding activities
- Coordinating external reviews, risk workshops, assurance activities, compliance assessments and associated reporting
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of audit, assurance,
risk and control frameworks, policies and processes
- Supporting business continuity planning, testing, exercising and improvement activities
- Providing professional advice to business areas on audit, assurance, risk and governance matters What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will bring robust experience across audit, assurance, governance, risk management or compliance, ideally within an Australian Government or similarly complex environment.
You will also demonstrate
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret information and identify trends, risks and improvement opportunities
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing reports, briefings and governance papers
- The ability to provide clear, professional advice and recommendations to senior stakeholders
- Robust stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to influence, negotiate and build productive working relationships
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet agreed deadlines
- Experience working with external providers, including contract or service provider management
- An understanding of audit, assurance, risk management, performance indicators, data analysis and reporting in a government context
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively across a geographically dispersed environment
