? Automation Engineer & SME (MSATS) | Energy Retail
Location: Melbourne Eastern Suburbs, Victoria
Work arrangement: Hybrid – 3 days per week in the office
Employment: Permanent, full-time
Salary: Up to $80K–$120K package + 12.5% STI, with bonuses of up to $15K per year The role carries great technical depth and ownership of automation design and optimisation, together with MSATS subject-matter expertise.

Our client is a progressive energy retailer that is transforming the way operational processes are designed, managed and automated. With a strong focus on technology, AI and smarter workflows, they are looking for an Automation Engineer & SME (MSATS) to help take their operations to the next level.
This is an opportunity for someone who understands energy retail operations and MSATS , but is also genuinely interested in automation, AI and intelligent decision-making . You don't need to be a traditional software engineer or an AI expert—you need to be curious, analytical, commercially minded and excited by the opportunity to build new ways of working.
? The Opportunity The role will initially combine energy operations, MSATS expertise and automation , before progressively moving towards advanced automation design, optimisation and AI-driven workflows.
You'll work closely with Operations, Product, Development, Technical and other business teams to identify manual processes, understand the underlying decisions and build smarter workflows that can automate not just repetitive tasks, but increasingly complex operational decisions.
You'll become a key SME for MSATS , helping design and implement automated processes around market transactions, data validation and AEMO-related requirements while working with architects and developers to integrate these capabilities into the organisation's technology platforms.
? What You'll Be Doing
- Design, document and build automations that replace manual operational processes.
- Apply your MSATS and energy retail knowledge to develop reliable, scalable automated workflows.
- Analyse existing processes and identify opportunities for automation and AI.
- Help move beyond traditional automation by exploring AI-driven and agentic workflows that can support decision-making.
- Develop and test workflows using approved automation tools, logic engines and scripting frameworks.
- Integrate AI tools and models to improve automation, decision support and operational accuracy.
- Provide SME guidance on MSATS-related technical and operational issues.
- Work with architects and developers to integrate MSATS capabilities with internal systems.
- Support the rollout and adoption of automation and AI capabilities across the business.
- Monitor automation performance, data flows and efficiency improvements.
- Document processes, automation logic, dependencies and outcomes.
- Continuously identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and introduce recent AI capabilities.
? What We're Looking For We're less interested in job titles and more interested in how you think .
You'll ideally bring
- Experience working in energy retail operations , particularly around MSATS or related market processes.
- An understanding of AEMO processes, energy market transactions and regulatory requirements .
- Experience in an operational, technical or process-focused role.
- Exposure to workflow automation or process automation .
- Robust analytical and problem-solving skills.
- A genuine interest in AI and how it can transform operational processes .
- The ability to understand a process, identify decision points and think about how technology could make it smarter.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Good Excel and data-handling skills.
- Python and/or SQL experience would be highly regarded.

? About the Environment
You'll join a relatively small and agile energy retailer where you can have a direct impact on how the business operates . The technology function includes around 40 developers, with this role sitting within the transformation/strategy function and working closely across Operations, Product and Technology.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role , rather than a people-management position, with plenty of scope to influence processes, technology and the future direction of automation.
