As a Stevedore you will work within a team responsible for the loading and unloading of cargo vessels at our Fremantle Terminal.
Your key duties will include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring the lashing / unlashing of containers to ships is being carried out in a safe, efficient, and productive manner.
- Performing ad hoc and general duties associated with the loading / unloading of cargo, including the fitting, and removing of container securing devices.
- Machinery operation including forklift and articulated vehicle tasks
These positions work on rotating shifts, generally of eight hours, day, evening and night, Monday to Sunday. Work is irregular based on ship arrival patterns and requires a high degree of flexibility and preparedness as employees may need make themselves available, often at short notice. A base guaranteed wage is paid, and a rostering and allocation system operates to regulate time off.
About your experience
To be successful in this role,
you will need good hand/eye/foot coordination and ideally have an understanding of manual handling techniques. Full training will be provided so previous experience as a stevedore is not essential. We are more interested in finding motivated, enthusiastic and safety conscious people who can work within a team. Of particular importance is a high level of availability and preparedness to attend for work consistent with our rotating shift system. Reliability is critical, and a current manual driver's license and access to your own transport is essential. Possession of a current HRWL Forklift is highly advantageous.
Please note, this is heavy manual labour based role involving lifting and stretching and thus applicants must have a good level of physical fitness. A successful medical and fitness test is a precondition for employment and all applicants offered positions must be eligible to obtain the Federal Government’s MSIC card for work on the waterfront.
