About the Service
Help aHead aims to improve access to mental health support for the community by delivering services that address people's social, physical and emotional needs.
It will provide access to psychological and psychosocial support, care coordination, and local service navigation, with the capacity to scale and meet a wide range of mental health needs, including those with co-occurring conditions or complex psychosocial barriers.
About the role
We are seeking a community connected and trauma informed Aboriginal Mental Health Practitioner for a permanent, fulltime (38 hours per week) opportunity in the Sydney area.
You will support culturally safe engagement of families, carers and community aiming to Improve access to mental health support for Aboriginal and First Nations peoples.
This position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands applicants only, as One Door Mental Health considers that being of Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act **** (NSW).
Key responsibilities
Provide culturally responsive and trauma-informed support tailored to the individual's beliefs, values, and practices
Work collaboratively with the broader multidisciplinary team to embed culturally inclusive practice across the service and strengthen cultural capability of the broader team
Promote increased engagement and trust in the service, particularly for individuals who may be hesitant to access mainstream systems
Promote more accurate understanding of needs through cultural informed assessment
Identify inequities in service access and outcomes supporting an environment where persons seeking support are welcome are secure and receive excellent care

What you'll bring
Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and have ongoing, active involvement in Aboriginal communities across the Central Eastern Sydney region and surrounding communities.
Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) are required in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health related field as designated by ODMH.
An understanding of the recovery-based approach to assisting people with mental health concerns.
Knowledge of the NSW mental health system and local services; or demonstrated ability to rapidly develop this knowledge.
Experience and expertise working directly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands Peoples people with mental health challenges, homelessness, complex needs and with their families and carers.
