About the role
The Infectious Diseases Advanced Training program at Barwon Health provides comprehensive clinical exposure across inpatient, outpatient and ambulatory care settings within a highly regarded tertiary referral service.
Trainees are involved in the management of complex infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention activities across multiple sites, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.
The department provides a broad range of specialist services including inpatient consultation, outpatient clinics, Hospital in the Home, HIV care, viral hepatitis, refugee health and antimicrobial stewardship programs.
There are strong links with the Barwon South West Public Health Unit, providing valuable experience in public health, epidemiology and outbreak management.
The program is strongly supported by a structured education framework, regular teaching, and close consultant supervision.
There are also excellent opportunities for involvement in research, quality improvement and academic development,



with established partnerships with Deakin University and infectious diseases research networks.
The program also offers a unique training opportunity through an Infectious Diseases Advanced Trainee placement in Alice Springs.
This role provides consulting inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases services to the Central Australian region, while supporting Infection Control, Hospital in the Home and Antimicrobial Stewardship programs within the hospital.
Trainees will also have the opportunity to work closely with the Centre for Disease Control in Alice Springs, gaining valuable experience in public health, outreach and the management of infectious diseases in a remote setting.
Support provisions, including accommodation and relocation assistance, are available for this placement.

Key responsibilities
Provide supervised day-to-day assessment, management and documentation of ambulatory and admitted Infectious Diseases patients
Develop and implement appropriate patient management plans,



prioritising multiple clinical issues and escalating to supervising consultants when required
Participate in continuing medical education, work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, and maintain professional, ethical and effective communication with patients, carers and healthcare providers
What we're looking for
Medical practitioner eligible for appointment as an Infectious Diseases Registrar
Demonstrated interest in infectious diseases and public health
Strong clinical, communication and organisational skills
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
