CodeWarriors is looking for an emerging game artist or digital designer to work with us on a casual, ongoing basis.
This could suit a university or TAFE student, recent graduate, or early-career creative looking to build experience across game development, digital design and creative technology.
The work will be varied.
Some projects will involve creating art and UI for games we're developing.
Others will involve CodeWarriors marketing and media, or helping young game developers improve the visual side of their own projects.
This is a paid casual opportunity, with work offered as suitable projects arise rather than a fixed number of hours each week.
About CodeWarriors
CodeWarriors combines software and game development with technology education.
We develop our own games and software products, while also running coding and game development programs for young people.
Our small-group programs for school students run across NSW and ACT.
Students build projects using real development tools including Python and the Godot Engine through Code Camps, Game Jams and our term-based Game Foundry programs.
What you might work on
We're looking for someone who can contribute across a mix of creative work.
Depending on your skills and interests, this could include:
Game art & UI
creating 2D game assets, characters, environments, icons and other visual elements
helping develop the visual style of games and prototypes
designing and improving game UI and UX
creating animations, effects or reusable asset packs
contributing art and design to CodeWarriors projects such as StackOps
CodeWarriors creative work
creating artwork for CodeWarriors websites and social media
designing graphics for camps, programs and events
helping develop promotional and digital media
occasional design work such as logos, stickers, shirts, posters and other merchandise
Working with young game developers
From time to time,
we'd also like you to share your skills with students participating in:
STEM Game Jams
Game Foundry after-school programs
This might involve presenting a short practical session, demonstrating how you approach game art, helping students develop assets, or giving constructive feedback on the games they are creating.
We want students to see that making games is a collaborative creative process involving much more than programming.
Who we're looking for
You don't need years of professional experience.
We're particularly interested in finding a young or emerging creative who is developing skills in areas such as:
2D game art
illustration
animation
graphic design
Experience with game development is helpful, particularly Godot or another game engine, but isn't essential if you're interested in learning.
More key is that you can show us examples of creative work, are comfortable learning new things, and are interested in contributing to both real projects and programs for young developers.
Tools & ways of working
Our game development work is primarily based around the Godot Engine and 2D games.
We're flexible about the art and design tools you use.
Depending on the project, this might include tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity, Figma, Aseprite, Krita, Blender or similar.
Much of the project work can be completed remotely, but we're looking for someone within the wider Sydney or Canberra regions who can also participate in occasional in-person student programs and creative sessions.
What you'll get from the role
This is intended to be genuine creative work rather than an unpaid internship or observation role.
You'll have opportunities to:
contribute artwork and design to real game and software projects
build portfolio-ready work
develop experience designing within real technical and project constraints
contribute to games and educational programs used by young people
share your creative skills with the next generation of game developers
The role can grow over time depending on your interests, availability and the work we have underway.
what you're currently studying or working on, if applicable
a link to a portfolio or some examples of your work
the areas of art/design you're most interested in
your general availability
A highly polished professional portfolio isn't necessary.
If you're still studying or starting out, we're happy to see university, TAFE, school, personal or game-jam projects.
