About the role The Yorkshire Regional Spinal Injuries Centre based in Wakefield at MYTT serves a catchment area of over 5 million across Yorkshire and Humberside including East Riding.
There are 2 inpatient wards totalling 32 beds, an outpatient department and theatre on site.
It is the first regional spinal injury centre implanting and follow-up for two distinctly different intrathecal drug delivery devices for pain and spasticity management.
You will be part of a medical team comprising of three Consultants in Spinal Injuries and one clinical fellow, resident doctor and trainee advanced clinical practitioner [ACP].
This is a new role at this Trust and the post holder will work alongside the senior consultant team in supporting establishing the care pathway as appropriate.
The fellowship offers excellent training opportunities for interested candidates.
The successful appointee/s will work within the regional tertiary spinal injury centre with a multi-disciplinary focus.
The fellowship will address all aspects of Spinal Cord medicine and management of long-term conditions as set out in the attached curriculum document.
The post would be suitable for individuals interested in pursuing a career in spinal cord medicine or for those who wish to gain additional experience in the comprehensive management of people with spinal cord injury.
An opportunity to work with the neurorehabilitation service may also arise in the future.
The post would suit those with a background training or experience in Rehabilitation Medicine that includes Spinal Cord Medicine and or Neuro Rehabilitation.
The post would also be attractive to those with a general practice background wishing to develop a special interest in management of long-term conditions.
The fellows will gain experience in the functioning of the national spinal cord injury pathway and the major trauma pathway.
The candidate will also have opportunity to get involved in quality improvement initiatives.
Main duties
Provide specialist clinical care to spinal cord inpatients and outpatients
Work closely with acute spinal teams to support patient flow and continuity of care, completing spinal cord rehab ward rounds




In conjunction with senior colleagues to play a full role in the out-of-hours on-call service for spinal including being on-call.
Although post holders may not initially have the competencies to manage the specialty cover overnight it is expected that with adequate training they will develop to take on this role.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and goal-setting processes
Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and service improvement work
Provide advice and support to community rehabilitation services
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
Act as a clinical and/or educational supervisor where appropriate
Engage in audit, quality improvement, and service evaluation
Participate in research activities where aligned with service priorities
Essential person specification requirements
Full GMC Registration with licence to practise
Medical Degree from recognised medical school MBBS, ALS/BLS (Where ALS/BLS is not current, BLS should be obtained or booked for before taking up the job)
Experience of working in specialist spinal injuries rehabilitation, stroke or neuro rehabilitation for minimum 2 years
Eligibility to work in the UK
Completed at least four years full time hospital service junior or higher grade since first obtaining full or limited registration, including a minimum 1 year experience in Spinal Injuries
Experience of being able to assess and manage people with Spinal cord injuries
Independently managed clinics reviewing patients with spinal cord injuries/head injury/stroke patients for a minimum of 1 year.
Experience of working with a multi-disciplinary team in planning rehabilitation goals for people with spinal injuries
Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate




Experience and commitment in teaching medical students and junior doctors
Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving.
Good time management.
