As an 'Engineering Manager | Piping' with Tate, you will lead and develop a team of piping engineers responsible for the design, documentation, compliance, and delivery of technology cooling system piping solutions for data centre projects across the APAC region.This role will manage piping engineering works from tender stage through to construction, ensuring customer requirements are correctly interpreted, technically compliant piping designs are developed, and design outputs are suitable for procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning.You will use your technical expertise in piping design, pipe stress analysis, 3D modelling, and isometric drawing production to guide the team in delivering accurate, cost-effective, compliant, and constructible piping solutions.
The role will work closely with project managers, procurement, manufacturing, product management, sales, and installation teams to ensure piping systems are designed, procured, and manufactured in accordance with project requirements and Tate standards.To excel in this position, you must possess strong hands‐on experience in process piping systems, piping materials, fabrication, installation, compliance requirements, and design workflows using software such as AutoCAD Plant 3D.
Experience in technology cooling, liquid cooling, mechanical cooling, pipe fabrication, manifolds, valves, or data centre infrastructure will be highly regarded.Key ResponsibilitiesLead, mentor, and develop the Piping Design Team, ensuring piping engineering deliverables are accurate, compliant, cost‐effective, constructible, and completed within agreed project timeframesManage piping design projects from tender through to construction, including review of customer requirements, tender documentation, technical specifications, project drawings, and applicable standardsOversee the development of piping designs for technology cooling systems in data centres, including pipe routing, pipe sizing, material selection, valve and fitting selection, supports, fabrication requirements, and installation requirements.Lead and/or review pipe stress analysis to ensure piping systems are designed to accommodate thermal expansion, pressure, loads, supports, vibration, and installation conditionsOversee the production and review of 3D piping models, isometric drawings, general arrangement drawings, manufacturing drawings, drawing registers, BOMs, and technical documentation using AutoCAD Plant 3D and other relevant design tools.Ensure piping designs are coordinated with project managers, procurement, manufacturing, quality, installation, and commissioning teams so that the final product can be procured, fabricated, tested, delivered, and installed in accordance with the approved design.Attend project meetings and provide technical guidance and support to sales, estimating, project management, procurement, manufacturing, and site teams.Review and interpret P&IDs;,
piping isometrics, engineering drawings, specifications, customer standards, and project documentation to ensure design accuracy and compliance.Support procurement and vendor evaluation by providing technical input on piping components, materials, fittings, valves, flanges, fabrication requirements, testing requirements, and supplier capability.Develop and maintain piping design standards, design guidelines, calculation templates, drawing standards, QA review checklists, and documentation workflows for the piping design teamWork closely with the Product Manager – Mechanical & Piping Systems to implement product documentation, BIM objects, modelling tools, specifications, BOM structures, manufacturing data, product improvements, and compliance requirements into project delivery workflowsContribute to product development and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure Tate's piping solutions are cost‐effective, manufacturable, scalable, and compliant with local, regional, and international requirements.Research, document, and maintain relevant piping design codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and customer‐specific requirements for data centre piping systems across the APAC region.Ensure appropriate engineering reviews, peer reviews, quality checks, and design risk assessments are completed before design releaseProvide technical support during fabrication, installation, pressure testing, inspection, commissioning, and resolution of site‐based technical issues.Manage multiple projects and design priorities, ensuring deliverables are completed accurately, on schedule, and to the required level of qualitySupport recruitment, onboarding, training, and capability development of piping engineers in Vietnam and, where required, future Sydney‐based roles.Key relationships:Internal and external stakeholders across Australia and the Asia Pacific region, including:Regional Engineering DirectorPiping Design TeamProduct Manager – Mechanical & Piping SystemsProject ManagersSales and Estimating TeamsProcurement and Supply Chain TeamsManufacturing and Fabrication TeamsQuality Assurance TeamsInstallation and Commissioning TeamsCustomers, consultants, suppliers, and contractorsEducation, Work Experience & Skills required, Personal QualitiesEducation:Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering disciplineAdditional qualifications in piping design, pressure piping, pipe stress analysis,
or project management will be highly regardedWork Experience and SkillsMinimum 10 years' experience in piping engineering, process piping, mechanical systems design, data centre cooling systems, oil and gas, food processing, industrial piping, or related sectors.Previous experience leading, mentoring, or managing a team of piping engineers or designers.Robust knowledge of international piping design standards and codes, including ASME B31 and AS****Demonstrated experience in the design, installation, erection, fabrication, and commissioning of process piping systemsExperience with technology cooling systems, liquid-to-liquid cooling, mechanical cooling, manifolds, valves, pipe fabrication, or data centre infrastructure will be highly regarded.Advanced proficiency in 3D piping design software, preferably AutoCAD Plant 3D, with the ability to review and guide the development of 3D models, piping layouts, and isometric drawings.Experience performing or reviewing pipe stress analysis and pipe support design.Strong understanding of piping materials, fittings, valves, flanges, supports, gaskets, fasteners, welding, fabrication methods, and manufacturing processes.Proven ability to review and interpret P&IDs;, isometric drawings, technical specifications, engineering drawings, and customer requirements.Experience preparing or reviewing piping classes, piping specifications, datasheets, BOMs, manufacturing documentation, and fabrication drawings.Understanding of pressure testing, inspection, quality assurance, NDT processes, and documentation requirements for piping systems.Ability to support procurement, vendor evaluation, and technical clarification processes for piping components and fabricated assembliesStrong project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, stakeholders, and engineering deliverables simultaneouslyAbility to identify and resolve technical issues during tender, design, procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning phasesStrong understanding of product compliance, manufacturing qualification, and quality control processes.Personal AttributesStrong leadership capability with the ability to mentor, coach, and develop engineering talent.Data-driven mindset with excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Robust communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.High attention to detail and commitment to technical accuracy.Practical and commercially aware approach to engineering design.Strong time management and organisational skills.Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product management, project delivery, procurement, manufacturing, and customer-facing teams.Continuous improvement mindset with a willingness to develop tools, standards, processes, and workflows that improve design quality and team efficiency.
