The Role

The Fires Modernisation Program is seeking an APS 6 Software Engineer to support the development and integration of NATO’s Shareable Software Suite (S4) Technology into the Fire Control System for the Australian Army’s new Self Propelled Howitzer capability, and more broadly throughout the Land Fires ecosystem as required.

In this role, you will contribute to the customisation, prototyping and verification of S4 based software components, ensuring interoperability with platform fire control architectures and Defence weapon systems. You will maintain S4 Technology environments, manage configuration and software artefacts, undertake software development and testing, and develop internal engineering tools to support system development and in service sustainment.

The position includes technical contribution to Australia’s participation in the NATO program, including analysis of S4 Problem Reports, development and verification of design solutions, conduct quality assurance through test and evaluation of products prior to cycle release, and undertake independent software audits.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. Our Ideal Candidate

Working under broad guidance of the EL1 Software Engineer, you will apply software engineering development, verification and validation principles to investigate defects, analyse system behaviour, conduct requirements assessment,



and provide technical advice across the software capability lifecycle.

Strong experience in software development, software integration, and structured engineering processes is essential. A demonstrated ability to develop, test and maintain complex software is essential.

Eligibility

Security Clearance:

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.

Mandatory Qualifications:

This engineering position requires a Bachelor of Engineering from an Australian institution, or a qualification gained elsewhere, that satisfies the requirements of the Washington Accord for recognition as a Professional Engineer.
