Client-focused. Team-driven. Performance-led.

THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Estimator to join our Sales & Estimating team.

This is a hands-on estimating role suited to someone with a strong background in mechanical fabrication, structural steel, industrial equipment, conveyors, materials handling or food and beverage processing environments.

Our work is varied, technical and often highly customised - which means our estimating team needs to understand not just how to price a job, but how the work will actually be designed, fabricated, installed and delivered.

You will take ownership of estimates from initial scope review through to tender submission, working closely with internal stakeholders and suppliers to develop pricing that is technically achievable, commercially sound and clearly defined.

We are looking for someone who can look at a scope and understand what it will take to build it - the materials, labour, fabrication, installation, equipment, sequencing, risks and commercial considerations - and turn that understanding into an accurate and competitive estimate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Estimating & Tendering

- Review drawings, specifications, scopes, RFQs and site information to understand project requirements.

- Prepare detailed, first-principles estimates covering materials, labour, fabrication, installation, subcontractors, equipment and other project costs.

- Complete material take-offs and develop realistic labour and fabrication allowances.

- Estimate mechanical fabrication and installation works including but not limited to structural steel, conveyors, platforms, equipment, chutes, guarding, pipework and associated industrial works.

- Obtain and assess supplier and subcontractor pricing.

- Prepare competitive and commercially sound quotations and tender submissions.

- Develop clear pricing assumptions, methodologies, inclusions and exclusions.

- Identify scope gaps, ambiguities, risks and opportunities before pricing is finalised.

Commercial & Risk Management

- Ensure estimates accurately reflect the proposed scope and delivery methodology.

- Identify and price project risks and uncertainties.

- Protect PFi's commercial position through clear scope definition, assumptions and exclusions.

- Review pricing against historical project data, current market conditions and available supplier information.

- Identify opportunities for value engineering and alternative delivery approaches.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

- Attend site visits, client meetings, tender briefings and pre-tender walkthroughs where require - clarify scope, technical requirements and project expectations.

- Work closely with internal stakeholders to validate technical assumptions and proposed solutions and confirm material pricing, fabrication capacity, labour requirements and installation methodology.

- Communicate estimates, assumptions and commercial positions clearly to both clients and internal stakeholders.

Handover & Continuous Improvement

- Provide a structured handover of awarded projects to the Project Management and delivery teams.

- Ensure estimate documentation, assumptions, supplier quotations and scope boundaries are clearly transferred.

- Participate in estimate-to-actual reviews and capture lessons learned.

- Contribute to improving estimating templates, rates, processes and cost data.

- Maintain accurate estimating and opportunity information within PFi's systems.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Essential

- Demonstrated experience as a Mechanical Estimator, Senior Estimator or similar role within an engineering, fabrication, manufacturing, construction or industrial environment.

- Strong understanding of mechanical fabrication and industrial project delivery.

- Ability to read and interpret engineering, fabrication and structural drawings.

- Demonstrated experience preparing bottom-up / first-principles estimates.

- Strong understanding of labour, materials, fabrication processes and installation methodologies.

- Commercial awareness and the ability to identify cost, scope and delivery risks.

- Solid attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines.

- Clear written and verbal communication skills.

- Ability to work collaboratively.

- A trade qualification, engineering qualification or equivalent practical industry experience will be highly regarded.

THE PERSON

We're looking for someone who:

- Understands how things are actually built, not just how they appear on a drawing.

- Can challenge a scope when something doesn't make sense.

- Is comfortable making decisions based on incomplete information while knowing when to ask the right questions.

- Has a strong eye for detail without losing sight of the bigger commercial picture.

- Can confidently communicate with clients, engineers, suppliers and trades.

- Takes ownership of their estimates and stands behind their numbers.

- Understands that a good estimate protects both the client relationship and PFi's margin.

- Enjoys variety and is comfortable working across different industries and project types.

- Wants to contribute to improving the way estimating is done, rather than simply working within an existing system.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

Success in this role means:

- Estimates are accurate, competitive and commercially protected.

- Scopes are clearly understood before pricing is committed.

- Material and labour allowances reflect realistic fabrication and installation requirements.

- Risks, assumptions, inclusions and exclusions are clearly identified.

- Tenders are delivered accurately and on time.

- Awarded projects transition smoothly from estimating into delivery.

- Estimate-to-actual feedback is used to continually improve future pricing.

- PFi wins the right work at the right price.

WHY JOIN PFi?

PFi offers the opportunity to work on genuinely varied industrial projects — from structural steel and fabrication through to conveyors, processing equipment, mechanical installations and larger engineered solutions.

You'll work alongside experienced engineers, fabricators, project managers and site teams, giving you visibility across the full project lifecycle rather than sitting in a siloed estimating function.

For the right person, this is an opportunity to become a key technical and commercial contributor within a growing business and help shape how PFi prices and wins work.
