The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) is looking for a Senior Lawyer to join its Launceston team.
The focus of the role will be to lead the criminal law practice within the region, support the operation & management of the office and provide culturally appropriate legal advice and representation on a broad range of criminal matters.
About TALS
The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) provides culturally appropriate legal advice, advocacy and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout Tasmania. We deliver services across criminal, child safety and family law while working to improve access to justice and achieve positive outcomes for our communities. TALS also operates a dedicated Family Violence Prevention Legal Service (“SiS”) for victim/survivors of family violence and sexual assault.

What we are looking for
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of high-quality legal services in your relevant area, including having carriage of complex matters before the Magistrates Court, Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeal.
- Lead, supervise and mentor lawyers, administration officers and legal support staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.
- Manage team workloads and files to ensure the timely, effective and high-quality delivery of legal services.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced lawyers, including support with complex matters and career development.
- Ensure high standards of legal, ethical and professional practice and contribute to the development and improvement of policies, procedures and service delivery.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal community organisations, stakeholders and other legal service providers.
- Contribute to systemic advocacy,
policy and law reform initiatives addressing issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including access to justice and overrepresentation in the criminal justice system.
- Represent TALS at relevant committees, forums and community events, and contribute to community legal education and outreach.
- Work collaboratively across TALS to ensure clients receive holistic and culturally appropriate support.
- Contribute as a senior leader to TALS’ strategic priorities, organisational culture and commitment to justice, human rights and self-determination.

Requirements
The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check, apply for or hold a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration, and have the ability to practice law in Tasmania.
A current driver’s licence is required, as travel across Tasmania including regional areas is a necessary requirement of the role.
